during the year to listen to their concerns and to in turn encourage the chamb ers to participate at the pro vincial level Were trying to build a stronger Ontario chamber Mr said These are rather dlif cult in some places In Canada Them are a lot of changes going on and if we try to run away from them or think that Twomonth wait for landfill ruling By STEPHEN FROST Herald Staff Writer It will be at least two months before a decision is released concerning ration application to expand the Burlington landfill site the regions solicitor made the prediction after an Environmental Assessment Board hearing ended last week in Burlington However the ministry of environment has given the region a provisional certificate of approval to design the expansion to the Burlington site Designs for the expansion of the Oakville and Burlington landfill sites which are used by Hills will cost the region The expansion will spill onto 30 acres of adjoining land and will have the capacity hold another 2S3 tonnes of solid waste The Burlington expansion is a technical modification to the existing site Capacity after expansion will be an additional l 000 tonnes The site has received most of the necessary approval from the various ministries Hills Conn Miller told The Herald really don t antic pate any problems with the Burlington site expansion once we present our design to the Environ mental Assessment Board Members of the Board who evidence during the Ihrteday session will prepare a draft report which must be presented to the full Assess merit Board The decisions of the Board may Include conditions which the region must In order to receive ministry approval We bought the land for expansion and now you re telling me we ve got to pay for a design Tor the Oakville site Coun Mannell complained All we did In the old days was dig a hole in the ground and bury garbage in it This design bOsiness sounds like a waste of the taxpayers money to me It Is a requirement by the ministry of environment that we do professional designs for expansions public works committee chairman Planch replied If we find out how to make these sites environmentally safe then we may find they become a source of lrrf tat loo for years afterwards It a to protect the people and designing these dumps property is the only way to do that Regional public works director Bob Moore said that if the region- la to provide continuous and uninterrupted disposal the site expansion must be completed by the end of June thteycar An area of square will be excavated nine the Oakville site to provide temporary landfill capacity white the site is being expanded will give the region another few months breathing apace Mr Moore told Coun Miller But we d better have the expansion on the site done by the end of June or we be In trouble they t going to happen then we re in trouble because they will happen THREE PROBLEMS Mr Duddy said moat small chambers of commerce have three major problems none of which seem to have affected Georgetown They are short of funds they have a problem attracting new members and the members t active in the chamber activities Ontario chamber has suni problems but because of the provincial scope they are somewhat magnified Mr said But we believe we have accomplished a great deal even so Membership In the Ontario chamber is made up of repre sentatives from 1 of the largerOnLariocorporalions In addition to representatives from all local chambers of commerce and boards of trade Only the local chambers and boards can vote at the meetings Mr Duddy said The Ontario chamber works closely with the government of Ontario to keep the govern ment up to date on the bides of businesses in the province and has also begun meeting with the opposition to discuss similar topics Mr Duddy said The reason for the dialogue with the govern ment is to keep them abreast of our cone rns because we must be prepared to speak out on many Issues before they become etched in stone Mr As ait example he said the chamber had made a present to the cabinet regarding the provincial budget Feb ruary 14 and many of the chambers proposals have been Incorporated In the bud
