apparently eral other southern states were conned a well When The Herald published a letter to the editor but October from Georgia State Prison inmate Dennis Dangar at least one Georgetown rest dent responded to the clally sincere Appeal for pen pals The six month exchange of letters which followed between Georgetown and Georgia ended abruptly last month after Mr defrauded a North Caro lina benefactor and was subse quently arrested for parole violation The benefactor a retired army colonel and former mathematics professor re ceived word that Mr Dangar was also corresponding with others Intercepted mail from these would be benefactors and advised them of the fraud through which he and several others had been conned The Georgetown resident who like the North Carolina gentleman does not wish to be Identified told The Herald Monday he stopped short of sending gifts money or offers of accommodation to the In mate as others have done THRFE According to a recent report In the High Point North Caro lina Enterprise Mr was serving a three year term In Georgia State Prison already done lime for various crimes including robbery when he appar enlly concocted the scheme to gain monetarily as well as socially while still in prison The North Carolina colonel and his wife responded to a letter printed In the Enter prise their hometown weekly newspaper feeling sympathe tic toward the convict as did hundreds of other readers In cenres scattered around the eastern seaboard and Canada In each own and city Mr letters were Idcntl except hat in each com munity he described himself as a native To he prisoner who had never felt more lonely in my life a Kansas Stale student malleda radio and to he orphaned young boy who lurried bad but who offer to share a smile the Colonel and his wife offered money and a roof overhead Upon his parole Mr took the colonel up on his offer accepted room board and MOO worth of clothing But soon after his arrival in High Point the excon confessed to his fraud the following mom he gathered his newly quired possessions and fled In a tetter to his fellow victim In Georgetown On the colonel reported that Mr Dangarhad been captured and would appear in court on a charge of violation of parole We re both heartbroken a il as he d become very close the colonel wrote The Georgetown resident similarly moved to sympathy by be prisoner apparently sincere appeal for friendship exchanged four or five letters with Mr Dangar between tober and March Although the convict hinted in a later letter to hot be could use some money there as no appeal for gilts or donations There was correspondence about the possibility of a vis to George town after Mr re lease The prisoner was reticent about his background the Georgetown resident commen ted choosing instead to write about activities he sold he was taking a course In prison and keeping the subject matter According to the North Caro lina colonel Mr Dangarlledln his original letter to The Her aid when he said his parents arc dead and hat he has no other relatives The convict told his Georgetown penpal be si on of marijuana Last week The Herald re ceived a phonccall from a newspaper reporler in Fort Lauderdale Florida who is investigating similar offences by other Georgia Stale con One other name that or inmate William Brinks has been mentioned in connection with the matter The Georgetown resident ex pressed surprise at the failure of the prison authorities to curtail such crimes at their institution and noted The Her aid failure to check the valid of Mr Dangar claims with mosquito spraying following a presentation from an Acton woman requesting reinstate ment of a program discontin ued by region three years ago Christina Houston of Churc hill Road North told the com mil tee Monday night she allergic to mosquitoes and re quires medication each spring and summer Neighborhood children also suffer from the same problem she said Since they live the edge of Browns Pond near the high school they are close the source of the problem and were requesting a resumption of the regions spraying pro gram Mrs Houston supplied coun cil with the name of a Univer sity of Guelph the pro vince and review their relationship We don t want to see a report explained We want details from each municipality in the region as well as Input from councillors here at the region All the treasurers in Ihe four municipalities will be queried We hope this type report will help us achieve a better re gional government We should know whether or not the province intends to share municipal
