Home Newspaper of Haiton Hafe Since A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Street Georgetown L7G 3Z6 Ontario PAUL J TAYLOR Publisher and General Manager PAUL DOUSE Editor PHONE DAVIDBEATTIE Advertising Manager Stcond Milt Number Page I SECTION A THE HERALD Wednesday November a Marios legacy much appreciated If Haiton Hills civil servants face the voters every few years In an election chances are planning director Mario Venditti might not yet be leaving us to take up a similar position In Guelph Such Is apparent popularity around town A majority of will have never met the man who more than moat has helped shape Haiton Hills future by planning Its present resources Indeed he has led the department responsible for municipal planning here ever since Haiton Hills was born nearly six years ago Before hat Mr was already deeply In volved In the community serving In the former town of Georgetowns planning department Hills Is Into Its second or third rounds of recreation directors engineers and cleritadmnfstrators not to mention mayors hut Mario was one of the originals Under guidance the town planning department baa been wading through the arduous task of consolidating three disparate official plans Into one has wrestled with the critical shortage of sewage treatment capacity has scoured the area for the best development sites and has defended and opposed numerous planning proposals before such agencies as the Ontario Municipal Board To the chagrin of many lay people municipal planning a slow and painstakingly thorough process too reliant on lawyers and too submissive to politicians Behind these charges though Is the simple fact that civil servants are doing their Jobs as best they can trying often under infuriating circumstances to please as many people as humanly possible In his eight and a half years working for Georgetown and Halloa Hills Mr Venditti has no doubt had fill of Irate citizens fencesitting and municipal councils that change their collective minds like a shifts directions Because he has maintained a conscientious and responsive attitude toward public and political demands we sincerely hope hes also had share of fair praise from the hes served And not so incidentally because hes always been open and helpful to the press we hope Mr Venditti aware of our professional respect for him On behalf of a stillgrowing Hills we wba him the best of luck In hb new position Letter from the editor Paul Dorsey Our karmic debt It must be almost two weeks now since tne daily newspapers and TV first reported Prime Minister Constitutional breakthrough with the provincial premiers The headlines rejoiced as they hailcda new era of cooperation and progress for Canada and the photographic linage of seated front and centre in the Commons his MPs stood in reverent ovation around him was again burned Into our biased memories That first day there was no room Tor bad news it seemed Only the Globe and Mai to the best of my knowledge found space inside virtually buried by the celebratory articles about Trudeaus coup for a report on the reaction of native Canadians InthedaysthathavefoUowed however press conferences and demonstrations held by Metis limit and Indians especially the ever- colorful tribal dances have held centre stage for the The rest of us Canadians neednt be too concerned by less than apologetic dismissal of yet another betrayal of the native people by those politicians engaged in deal making provisions guaranteeing aboriginal rights as well as civil rights for women he said ended up In the wastebatket because thats the only way certain premiers would accept his latest counteroffer on the Constitution So much merde as they say There b a point when playing politics however noble the stated intention might be overrides common sense and decency and endangers the common good Trudeau bid for immortality indeed divinity In his own lifetime can politically afford a pseudosympathetic shrug for the Indians as long as there are dissenting premiers to blame Since my preteens when I first became civilized North America despite dally threats of scalping didn so much settle the land as steal it Ive tendered how us white folks could allow the native people to continue suffering Everyone I talked to certainly seems aware that being an Indian on reservation today to the same perhaps worse than being a black American in the ghetto ten years ago But voters especially In the wild west continue to support racist government Some federal administrations and many provincial ones have been downright genocldal not just unconcern ed when it came to stinkin Indians The current rentiers of some of those western provinces will to explain their own failure to enshrine aboriginal rights but voters across Canada should listen well to whose name keeps popping up ironically in the contest of the United Nations when election time rolls round and hes asked to tell us who are those haggardlooking people skulking in the corner of our history books Why am I not so embittered about the dropping of provisions for womens rights Simply because I predict that Judy and her sisters will ensure that protection and If not then the Canadian version of the Equal Rights Amendment will come soon albeit not soon enough Far scarcer and far more threatened our native people I fear will not survive the white mans concept of civilization A sad point In Canadian history you say when the last Indian dies But wUi carry on you reassure yourself and our children will have learned the lesson that all men are equal even it It took a races extermination to prove it Unfortunately my personal beliefs allow me no such reassurance I believe in the wholeness of creation a vast Inverted pyramid with each species of life occupying a small place Remove one strain of bird life the dodo and minor but irreparable damage Is done Remove an important link in the noble chain of mammals the blue whale I fear and the pyramid starts to shudder Remove an entire people even delete their will to live and the magnificent structure assembled by Cod will collapse Georgetowns annual t charit Good Neighbors Betty at Renes just marking time as BNA agreement stews Ottawa Report Ottawa Hurts of The Herald Judging by the tone of Premier Rene Levesquca tirade at the opening of the Quebec National Assembly he seems to be simply marking time waiting to see haw the public perceives the constitutional agreement reached between Ottawa and the nine other provinces Sich a blistering barrage might at first blush appear to be a strange way to mark time but given the peculiar circumstances there Is probably no safer recourse Ottawa bushing is always good Tor some relatively harmless timekilling There were those who expected Premier to open the news session by announcing a provincial election or perhaps a referendum to marshal public support for a show down with the government over the constitutional issue And if the premier was absolutely certain of winning he would probably force such a confrontation His relatively cautious approach would indicate that he Isn sure how the accord and Quebec s Isolation from It will be viewed by the population WANTS TIME He clearly wants to work on this public opinion before committing himself And one of the projects being planned by his Parti Is govern me Is an information and advertising bills to counteract what he termed a federal brainwashing campaign He also said he wouldn take part in further federal provincial talks unless they relate directly to financial or economic interests But even here he leltlhedooropcnacrack lip didnt cut himself off from any option But in stalling for time the premier certainly burned Trudeaus cars a not unexpected event consider what happened lost week And he also singed his fellow premiers and the community This macabre farce will remain without question a historical event It Is a historical event because Quebec was shamefully betrayed because will now know that no com promise they make whether as citizens or through their government is enough to make English Canada our particular character As In every crisis there is a moment of truth And what it reveals about the others Is their true undo mental attitude toward Quebec what they have just produced together Is a Canada without Quebec a Canada from which Quebec is excluded without being trussed up He went on to declare that no self respecting Quebec government could ever accept such an agreement He also flayed Ihc premiers for alleged betraying Quebec by breaking their solidarity and making a deal with Prime Minister Trudeau CAUTION EXPECTED Considering what happened at last a federal provincial conference one can quite readily understand why Premier would be uncertain about the publics perception While It politically opportune to talk about betrayals and how other provinces broke their unwritten agreement and left Quebec out in the cold many people will remember Mr initial reaction to the prime ministers proposal for referendum This preceded the final agreement and at that the Quebec premiers left the clear Impression that he was willing to break with his fellow premiers and Join the federal proposal Mr even talked of the new alliance between Ottawa and Quebec And Premier was widely displayed on television appearing to embrace Trudeau honorable proposition At that time it was who seemed to be breaking with his fellow It could take some time for the public perception of such a turn of events to be fully comprehended It could also take some time Tor the premier to decide whether he can successfully campaign against such motherhood issues as guaranteed language rights and mobility rights They are not traditionally good So It Isnt surprising that all things being considered Premier decided to simply mark time by engaging in that grand old spectator sport of bashing Ottawa Its a harmless way to pass time Votebuying in multiculturalism post Queens Park By Derek Nelson Queens Park Bureau of The Herald Federal Multiculturalism Minister Jim Fleming portfolio Is essentially a Liberal votebuying gimmick set up for socalled ethnic Canadians arent a department formed substance or reason But even the very political nature of its existence does not excuse the sloppy mlslendjtig speech Fleming made here recently on racial stereo typing in the media He complained the media perpetuates these stereotypes and as a result hes going ado the usual Liberal thing of bringing out guidelines so well all know how to think correctly In the Brave New Liberal World Flemings proofs for this stereo typing are rather confused but Include such dubious thoughts that because foreign news reporting concentrates on the negative Canadians are signalled that non whites are violent and volatile Bight on Jim especially In Ireland Spain Israel Iran and so on WHO But there is one example from Fleming that I wsnt especially to discuss because It deals with an Ontario Incident about which Im relatively well Informed Fleming spoke of the pig tailed coolies and laundry men and the wily Oriental of Whoseen on TV Ontario until It was cancelled because of complaints of dangerous often racist stereotyping Someone unaware of Dr Who might Immediately leap to the conclusion that Who was Oriental that the program was a feast of laundry men stereotypes and that it was cancelled by audience complaints Who Is a socolled while the show of British science fiction semi serial and it remains on air However one Dr Who episode dealing with a for away planet was censored by TV Ontario staff because the background for the adventure was I believe a variation on Dynasty with Its pigtails and emigrant laundry men WRONG POINT So if Fleming wants to talk about on air skreotyplng he is away off base with Who episode never got that far Whether It should have Is another question When back grounds used AngloSaxon barbarians or feuding Venetian noblemen there was no censorship None of this Is a say there is no stereotyping on television It goes on Muggers almost Invariably shows as white So ore racists In the travesty history was changed in the most blatantly racist manner to make an Ulster Protestant a foreign devil Although one might not bo able to tell the distortion using only current school history books I understand accurate factual Information is snipped from them nowadays because one pressure group or another finds a touch of past reality offensive DO AWAY But beyond television and even history books there can be no question that the biggest contributor today to ethnic stereotyping in Canada Is Fleming own ministry and whole industry premise la that we all belong to different groups can be pegged as this or that type counted by color to see whos socalled under represented and bought by the Liberals racist appeal WE let YOU In Flemings Job should go Multi Is racist It divides people The name of the game should be assimilation- regardless of color creed origin or whatever Turn us all Into middle class Canadians with middle class Canadian ideals and values I say Globe thanks
