Home care set for mentally handicapped Special Home care for mentally handicapped children I a new program developed by Children Aid Society to provide foster can for men- tally handicapped children The program is being co- by Oakland Regio nal Centre and developed In response to a backlog of requests for alternative community accommodation for mentally handicapped children who would otherwise have been Children placed In this program will not necessarily be in need of protection under the Child Welfare Act or be wards of the CAS although the program will be run the society to compliment the Minting foster care program The program provide foster care for mentally handicapped childr en an alternative to and parent relief for parents with men handicapped children Iheir homes These children develop more normally in a homelike setting which is leu restrictive and ultimately less expensive than Institutions It alio better promotes adjust ment to normal living for children who have already been Institutionalized Under this program one placement home will be opened Tor three mentally handicapped children and three other foster homes will be available for the placement of one mentally handicapped Health promotion The District Health Council hosted a seminar health promotion techniques Jan 16 which provided encouragement well as idea for area agencies In boosting public of and appreciation for health care Jerry Conway of the ministry of healths promotion and Information branch Dr Rhonda Love from the University of Torontos department of behavioral sciences and Dr
