Reality of Christs suffering death imparts true lesson of Lenten season By JOHN DRiCKAMER I to must I We ore now In Lent when Christians concentrate on Christ suffering and death for our lira In Advent when we prepare for Christmas we often go over the Old Tata prophecies about the human birth of the Son of Cod In Lent it should be helpful la reflect on an Old Testament prophecy about the human death of God the Son Psalm Is the most detailed Biblical description of the suffering Christ on the cross The Ticw Testament does not really the crucifixion There was no need to describe it when the Gospels were written for everyone kncwwhatitwasallabout But is a prophecy With out the detail of being nailed It nevertheless speaks of the a nous kinds of pain CLERGY COMMENT Christ suffered rejc on by men is described in verses But 1 am a norm and no man a reproach of men and despised of the people All they that see me laugh me to scorn they shoo out Hie 1 p they shake the head saying lie trusted on the LORD thai he would deliver him let him deliver him seeing he delight ed in him There a similar picture in versus and 13 To sec the fulfillment look up Matthew The physical of cruet Is described In versus and is I am poured out like water and all my are out of Joined my heart is wax It melted in the of my bowels My strength is dried up a potsherd and my tongue to my Jaws and thou hast brought me into the dust of death The only detail here that Is mentioned in the New Testament is Christ thirst John 19 8 Bui we know from secular writers who described cmci hat his was the kind of agony it produced Christ body hung there supported by the nails in His and feet The weight of Ills body pro duced most of the pain for it lead to the dislocation of the shoulders and other It also caused unnatural position and pressure for the trunk of the body and the organs inside Trinity United it This distortion of the body shows up in verse IT may tell count t all my bones Anyone who knows he story will recognize verse 16 as a r Jesus being nailed to the cross They pierced my hands and feet Verse IB says They ments among i lots upon my vesture That was done by he Roman sol diers Matthew S3 Schol have pointed to the similar between He hath done this tverse 3D and It is finished John IB 30 Even more could be said but if you have read the whole Psalm and are familiar with the narrative of Jesus death you are probably asking why I have not yet referred to the m obvious point Jesus this psalm on he cross when He said My God my God why hast thou forsaken me Psalm Matthew where Matthew shows that Jesus quoted this in he original Hebrew 1 that points the greatest suffering of Christ But it is also that verse that points o he greatest comfort for us Christ was perfectly innocent and right personally But He will and voluntarily became guilty before His heavenly Father for the sins of all mankind He was rejected by the Father Here Is mystery which we cannot fathom that God the Son wan rcectcd by God the Father But it a most important fact He was so that we might be accepted Our sins are forgiv en for one reason and for one reason only hat the spotless Lamb God took them away from us and upon Himself and Himself suffered the full pun it lor hem on he cross Christ was forsaken We arc accepted by God Thai is the Gospel You may study Bible all your life and learn all kinds of wonderful things But the Gospel remains central Christ was forsaken to hat we might be accepted by God Continued from page AS and pews Installed ir The Acton church continued to grow and record from
