Page SECTION THE HERALD Wedneiday June 16 1SS2 Tackle strength to be a force in Cup play World Cup Soccer began In earnest on Sunday with Argentina first to play In defence of its championship Belgium were to provide stern yet token opposition following the opening ceremonies This was not to be The Belgian team did not come to lose and fought for every ball until the final whistle upsetting the champions by 10 A pattern emerged early on in the game Strength In the tackle is going to be a forte in this cup championship and many free kicks will be given away If this game is an Indication of what is to come Goals will be scarce with tight and illegal marking by defenders Some games will be shown on who are to be commended upon taking a real world championship series loacountiiesBtartedonthetrall years ago culminating in teams going to Spain There will have been over 600 games played to decide the eventual winner The concensus of opinion Is that Bra II West Germany Argentina Spain as the host nation usually docs well may fill the last Tour spots The slipped to a record after a result in Jacksonville A damning indictment of artificial turf came from this match Blizzard goalie Jan kicked the turf as he was taking a goal kick and the ball went straight to the of a Tea Man forward who promptly scored The goal was completely against the run of play with Blizzard unable to capitalize on their superior approach work Injuries had on effect on team selection and Toronto club are still looking for a name striker t we all Bill young ladies of peewee age arc looking good in the select team They played a fine match against Jean a bantam Junior mix and did not look out of place with the older and more experienced girls I also saw part of a league match with John DeVnes bantams and those girls can turn on a few skills along with the best There are some players In ladies soccer who look pretty good and they certainly seem to have a lot of fun which is the name of the game Another six Inter County league players were suspended at the last disciplinary hearing on Thursday last Reports indicate that the situation may not be as bad as it sounds Nevertheless the league Intend to stamp out wayward players and clubs will be warned at the league meeting on Thursday evening that the current trend of offenders is alarming A fine match took place between Eagles and Mariners with Eagles running out winners in the end The game began as if the Manners would take command Eagles refused to panic and scored three goals in the first minutes and held on to the lead throughout Mariners came back to tic at one point but could not apply the killer touch when it was needed METEORS WIN Meteors Blues and Whites both recorded wins the Whites over SWM by goals In the last minutes of play and the Blues over Acton at Ccdarvale Acton did not took their usual self and promise a different result when they meet Mariners Ccdarvale at this evening Falcon Reserves had a rough time at Butcher earlier and took a heavy defeat However the results do not count for the Falcon officials as they are building for the future and want the lads to enjoy their game first Results will come later Brackens defeated Vikings by 32 This week Brackens are at home to MrM Milton under the new lights at Moore Park a welcome addition to our facilities and much needed by soccer A number of our youth rep reserves have indicated that they no longer wish to be part of rep squad in this position Firstly this costs the club registration Tees at district and Ontario levels as their forms require to be cancelled and new forms purchased for replacements When the players try out there Is little or no indication that they do wish to be considered only as rep and not as reserves if they do not make the first selections I will only play if make it types of players are not trying in the spirit of the game and the set up of the club Frankly Id rather do without them a rep or house league levels Actually cannot understand this altitude If they do not make It this time maybe they will the next lime If they try a little harder Mosquitoes Bomb green team Itanium girls
