issue To the editor of The Herald With reference to your recently published articles by MP John McDermid concerning the Operation Dismantle issue I would like to express my apprec iation for the commend able community service you continue to provide the residents of Hills I have taken the liberty to write to Mr McDermid In this regard and enclose a copy of my correspond to him for your perusal Needless to say the opinions expressed therein are those of one concerned Individual Keep up the good ser vice truly Porter Re Operation Dear Mr McDermid read with Interest your two articles in the above Careless GO commuters endanger streets residents To the editor of The Herald I live on Queen Street In Georgetown Our street Is a pleasant one lined with large trees and old houses Mnny families live on this street most of them have pets The street has only one unfortunate characteristic It leads to the GO Train Station There no stop signs to break up the street despite the fact that there is an Intersection part way up As a result many cars travel back and forth at Confidentiality at volunteer bureau To the editor of The Herald This is just a note to clarify one aspect of the article on the front page of the Weekend Extra last week requesting volunt eers to help out in the Although it is well known that all aspects of our work ire confidential e would like to emphas ize that our volunteers are not privy to strictly dcntiil information about our clients I was can that when our clients read this they might get the Impression that confidential in Forma Hon may be made avail able to these volunteers I wonder If we might impose on you and ask for a clarification to be print stating clearly that the personal affairs of our clients arc confidential and the information is kept confidential and not given out to the volunteers work in our office We do appreciate the support The Herald has given us in the past and we hope we can count on your continued assistance in the future Chief Harding clarifies article To the editor The Herald Now that the time for submissions on vehicle for the chief of police has elapsed I feel free to comment upon the matter The supply of a vehicle for the personal use of the chief of police is a tractural agreement be tween my office and the board of commissioners of police and do not Intend to debate the content of that working agreement In the media It is true to say that previous senior ad ministrators were supp lied with vehicles and It la my recollection that these vehicles unlike the re mainder of Ihe police fleet were fitted with radios and carpet Some two years ago commissioners agreed to improve the quality and standard of the vehicle provided for the use of the chief The quoted figure carried recently in the OakviUe Beaver on proposed cost of the ve hicle for the chief Is alarm Ingly Incorrect An exam of our program budget will Illustrate the fact that plus the trade of a 1978 vehicle estimated at 1000 for a total of til has been budgeted for the purchase of a vehicle for the chief At today prices that hardly represents a luaury purchase In order to stay within budgeted costs and in an attempt the opt ions requested we have requested quotes on low mileage used cars Should those quotes be In excess of 1 am obligated to take the proposed pur chase to the commission en for their decision In any event the pro posed purchase should not exceed the budgeted tun of 11000 The newspaper article and editorial mi written leave the public with the Impression that the comm issioners have washed their hands of the financial control of this force If some officer or It some person has advised you of hat you have been gross ly misled The board exer cises its financial control over the administration of the police force through It financial control bylaw passed a whole and enforced diligently by their authority through my office chief Through More letters See page A 6 Ihe medium of this by law the whole of the board retain financial control of the administration of the force To this end I would advise you that recently the Halton regional force had Its routine audit con ducted by officers of the Ontario Police Com miss Ion and would quote a relevant passage from that report which to our accounting processes The budget preparation and total accounting sys tem of the Halton regional police force is in good order Other municipal police forces should be encouraged to emulate the preparation of their 1962 program budget That hardly supports the claim that there Is no res within the regional force The last line of the editorial in the Oakvllle Beaver newspaper refers to the fact that I have not returned telephone calls in response to questions con cerning the purchase of a vehicle In addition to the com ment regarding the con straints upon mo by the quotation system I would like In stress the following facl It has al ways been my policy and will continue to be so that I do not respond to anony mous complaints but treat Ihem with the con tempt they deserve Chief James Harding Oakvllle breakneck speed cither to catch a train or to make it home ahead of the crowd One day last week I came home to find some of the neighborhood children attempting to ride their bikes down a steep slope and across to the other side or the street Cars speeding along would have no way of seeing these children as they darted suddenly in front of them 1 warned the children or this danger and luckily they listened to me and went to somewhere else My cat was not so fortunate Two days later it was hit by a morning commut rushing to get to the GO station Sadly this person felt that getting to work on time was more important than slopping to let us know he had hit our pet There are two points would like to make here One Is that if people must commute to work can they not time themselves so as to avoid a mad rush to the station at last minute The second point is that a four way stop is necessary at the tion of Queen and McNabb people arc forced to slow down to a reasonable speed and pay attention to the ir surroundings as they drive along Queen Street Next time it may be a child A Maltouk regard which were pub lished In our local news paper The Herald May 28 and June May I extend my con gratulations for not only did you present points of opinion on both sides of the subject matter you also presented a practical lernatlvc Apparently Hills council wilt be voting un doubtedly past tense by this date In favor of placing a YES or NO question concerning dis armament on the next municipal election ballot lips Provided however the legality question Is resolved Then there Is the matter of wording to be used on the ballot slip Who will give final approval in this regard Do we really need more costly hassles After all those Individuals speaking for the Ion Operation Dismantle are confident that the majority of the free world people would support bal anced disarmament So what awe inspired megs- age do they hope to convey to the governments of these people Obviously their pri mary objective la to Inten sify through propaganda the psychological war which has been undermin ing the principles of demo cracy for some time How often does history have to repeat itself before we awaken ourselves to the fact that wo will be Ihe ultimate losers if we con tinue to support such movements on their terms Presently as a demo cratic freedom we have the right to protest per haps we should be protest ing to maintain that right Being a peace minded resident of Hills I appreciate your participa tion and concern regard ing this Issue PS I for one will be interested In learning aa to how successful the ballot ing goes In the Soviet bloc countries truly Porter John
