the HERALD Home New of Hills Established 866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Georgetown L7G3Z6 Ontario PALL J TAYLOR and General Manager Manager tttnetr 0M3 Page A Tilt Wednesday September Another take added to Terrys story It t just the fact that Georgetcn seems so at tractive to film makers that made the threeday visit by Robert Cooper Productions so gratifying it was also the nature of the project itself As was pointed out in The Herald front page story last Wednesday Halton Hills seems likely to always have a warm spot in its heart for Terry Fox His passage through town on the Marathon of Hope was very special few if any other Canadian communities on the route can claim that he spent so much time with them for such a short distance plus there was the emotional banquet held at the Georgetown Lions Hall and the fact that he was mid transit of Hills when the huge Toronto City Hall recep tion took place Clearly moved deeply as a community by his presence here Halton Hills reacted by giving more generously than most to the cancer research fund he promoted And when the young runner from Port Coquitlam B C finally died after having to abandon his Marathon in Thunder Bay the feeling of grief here was per and thorough Only at that point did most Canadians fully realize the scale of the undertaking hed tackled and what hed sacrificed in the process The first Terry Fox Run at two locations in Halton Hills was a sound success and the local cancer unit is optimistic about the second this Sept 19 So it seemed all the more fitting that Georgetown should somehow be chosen as a location for the filming of Terry s story Though it will appear as a New Brunswick town in the finished movie Terry local residents will know and be able to explain to future generations how ap propriate the choice of locales was Our thanks to Cooper Productions its unit location manager Otta Hanus director Ralph Thomas and all of his crew members for not only sharing with us the excitement of moviemaking but for remin ding us all graphically about the summer Hays in 1980 when the real Terry Fox was among us Our thanks also to the movie crews for their approach to thccommunity their patient handling of spectators and press and their own com phments paid our citizens It was almost the Marathon of Hope relived if only in our imaginations We 11 look forward to seeing it all on the big screen Letter from the editor Paul Dorsey Static 9 memories It really is another world when you open up the huge bound editions of back issues of The Herald he and earlier I recommend a couple of hours perusal to anyone who has the inclination Ihe public is welcome to drop by our office and do so and their time certainly won be wasted My recent trip through turned up these two gems The Herald ad reproduc here recalls that North America was in the midst of Great Depression that year so occasional Ireats like a free movie the Gregory later the Theatre on Mill Street which burned down welcome One can only speculate about quality of the sound equipment Then there the following tidbit from about the same time headlined Static Gregory Theatre Mon Oct 3rd at and 30 UNEMPLOYED Everybody Welcome PRESENTING Stranger In Town Ok ln MO versus Jazi I no big Jan fan but I always get a kick out of the popular films of the early 1950s that document parental opposition to rock roll This piece is somewhat the same A correspondent writes Static is without doubt a great nuisance to radio listeners a nuisance that radio experts there Is another radio nuisance caused by downright Ignorance and conceit That is far greater menace to Ihe majority of radio listeners as well as a detriment to the radio business I refer to that miserable rasping screeching jazz that is neither singing nor reciting but a dilapidated of both If some of those hollow headed swains who persist in thrusting their unwelcome suffering public could just sit five minutes at the other end of the lino and listen to their own voices screeching screaming and reciting all at the same time some of those silly little puppy lot songs Ihey would if they had a grain of in their noodles go away back and sil down A few evenings ago after a day of work and worry sat down at my radio and tuned in hoping to hear something soothing Bui suffering saints the first thing I heard was a feminine voice which sounded more like the screeching of a backyard tomcat than it did like a human voice as she screeched out 1 m Falling in Love With Someone 1 again turned the dial and this time I was greeted with a male voice that reminded me of the wailing of a demented cow bawling for her calf and before 1 had time to choke him off Ihere came lo my ears a grating mour voice out I in love with My Utile Sugar Baby am a firm in the old adage which says if at first you don succeed try again and so once more I lumed the dial to be greeted with a soloist which really and truly sounded more like an overgrown bullfrog croaking in a mud hole than it did like a human voice as lo a rasping grating inhuman voice half singing and half reciting he wailed out All I Want Sweetheart lb You Being thoroughly disgusted I pulled the control switch and shut the machine off thinking if not saying some words which would not look well In print Finger gesture suggests Trudeaus bowing out Even Joe Clark faith that Prime Minister Trudeau seek another term of office must be Waning a bit In the face of that prime ministerial finger gesture You know the gesture werefalk ing about that onefingered upvard movement he displayed to a tiny of British Columbia proles ho greeted Trudeau as he admired the scenery from the comfort of a railway coach There are varnus definitions for that particular some of them unprintable some of them complimentary The protesters who had turned just before a smattering of expressed their displeasurs at the prime minister were apparently objecting to this luxurious vacatlot while million Canadians arc job less In any event effectively told them what they could do with their protest signs And significantly the incident occurred just one week after Tory Leader Clark told a national television audience he is convinced that Trudeau will lead the Liberals into another general election WONT QUIT You might recall Clark words I Mr but I do not regard him as a man who backs away from a fight I think that there Is an clement that some would call stubborn an element of stubborn ess there that will ensure he going to be there And the Consevative Leader went on to say that he I think the Grits could find a better leader at this time Well in view of what happened on that private railway coach even Clark must be reappraising his assessment of the prime minister and his future Surely even for such an orthodox politician as Pierre Trudeau there must be a limit to what he feels he can get away with if he harbors the slightest hope of seeking reelection always did suspect that Clark assessment of the prime ministers future has governed to a larger degree by wishful thinking considering the state of the public opinion polls why he want to run against But even this wishful thinking must be stretched to the point of unreality Its one thing to be an acknowledged scrapper and also be stubborn but it quite another thing for a prime minister to give the one treatment lo people who are merely protesting his luxurious travel arrangements In times of economic crisis Most Canadians loved Trudeau for his offbeat behavior back in 19 when he told a Quebec separatist that unless you shut up I am coming down there to kick your Cheers were heard from one end of the country lo the other because that the way we liked to hear our prime minister address the dreaded separatists A few years later most people particularly in Ihe West were for less amused when came out with another rather unpolitical comment Why should I sell your wheat he asked Taken in context the question might have been fair enough but prime ministers simply don t ask those things WON CHEERS But when it comes lo the epitome In unpolitical behavior nothing can top latest display The placards that greeted his train read Please show some leadership fly economy class Another said Restraint practise what you preach And for that the protestors got the finger treatment from the prime minister Even allowing for the peculiarities of just can Imagine that any prime minister whose party has already plunged below the disaster level in the West would ever offer such a disdainful gesture If he entertained the slightest dreams of ever facing that electorate again He may be singularly stubborn but he a not singularly stupid Grits six and five support begins political chess game By Derek Nelson Liberal Leader David Peterson call for mandatory across the- board wage and price controls Is first move here in what undoubtedly will be a very complicated chess game The object la lo convince people that one player has the best policies and most attractive leadership talents In the search for ways and means to escape the recession It will be a strange threecornered game with premier BUI Davis domln a ting the board because he actually has the power do something while Peterson and Leader Bob try to oneup him By coming down hard for the federal government six and five world Peterson obviously has that popular sentiment lies in that direction Moreover by arguing that wage restraints apply to ihe private sector as well as the public he has preemp ted Davis in the one area ihe premier has appeared most reluctant about controls GAVE PROMISE Holding bock public sector salaries while Ignoring the private would be inequitable Ihe premier has said times and last January he promised he would not single out government employees for control And Peterson has called for a softening of the most unjust aspect of the proposed federal controls that a person nuking yearly mean the gap between them will take quantum jump In a true controls program wage increases would not be pegged on but tied in with what the cost of living actually rose on dollar basis Otherwise as in the above the lower paid person Ikcly would fall further behind Inilat itn while the higher paid would get furthcrahead Tomatoes cost the same for everybody WHY CONTROLS Peterson claims it is Imperative the premier vigorously promote across thcboard restraint when the 10 premiers gather in Halifax week A coalition of consensus Is ml to our economic recovery be said Ironically Davis probably agrees whole with that observation The difficulty the premier faces judging from his recent remarks is thai lie has yet to sec any real consensus emerging has not stayed premier for a decade by leaping into policy decls Still If the Ontario government does decide lo eater the six and five world Peterson has telegraphed where he is going to concentrate his fire beyond the wage question He wants controls on all prices of products and services distributed or regulated by the government In short a six per cent rate boost for Ontario Hydro instead of 13 per cent for example With the price of borrowed money high interest rales being such a largo component In Hydro a escalating costs that may prove impossible to achieve But most people will applaud the goal sought by Peterson Meanwhile the have yet to make a move on the board For Ihe moment they are In a checkmate position of being against wage controls bul for price controls a position even they likely don take seriously We may see he
