Cancer Society HOW widel yread is the herald Danish class questions article To the editor of The Herald We are a group of pupils from a Danish Gymnas ium ie secondary school who would like to comment upon the article Looking American In for Danes from your July 14 Issue After having discussed the text In some of our English classes we have decided to send this letter to the editor because we think that the Canadian girl exchange student Barbara Trevlranus claims several facts which we definitely do not agree with and which In some cases are manifest mis understandings Barb says that we don t have any exams or teals but we do In fact they re compulsory in the Danish school system as can be seen by consulting Ihe Danish laws of education We have exams once a year a varying number of testa through the year and In the last year two extra comprehensive tests one in November and one in February Each class Is not minutes as claimed by Barb In the article she says that there Is a lot of group work This varies from school to school At our school we don use it that much so It a hard to say in general whether group work Is that predominant Perhaps we do have a more social attitude to wards the slowest member of the class tt there still Is quite a bit of Ion between pupils for the question of snorts versus paUlfcs we think that the pupils of the gymnasium Barb frequen ted were very politically Involved compared to most other gymnasiums At most clubs and activities are preferred to political ones Very few are members of political parties Concerning the question of Canada being like Sib eria we would like to mention that Canada has In fact got quite a bit In common with Siberia speaking both being vast countries with enor mous variation Canada is divided into provincial tricts roughly the sice of US stales so this was perhaps forgivable The real stupid question la the one about Ronald Reagan being your president unforgivable Bat bow about looking the other way found A few of us have visited either Canada or the VS and have been asked if Denmark was the capital of Sweden There seems to be a balance In toe mutual We should also like to explain a few things about the altitude towards the US and Canada Barb said in the article that looking American Was the In thing for Danish teen although she also fell quite a hit of resent merit towards America It is true that our society Is heavily Influenced by the American way of life we have imported the fast food establishments and il almost Impossible not to run Into American fashion In our shops blue Jeans sweatshirts shirts etc Still the re sentment Is felt and shown by the people who are indignant about the wail ed affluence and critical of what they sec as mindless consumerism When we read your art lcle itgavetheimpression of Denmark being a social 1st state such as say the Soviet Union with state in charge of every thing But he fact is that in Denmark we have free enterprise everyone is free to open a factory without the slates Inter Even If our govern merit until a short while social democrat ic it was a minority government unable to govern without the oration presently led to the latter take is always of interest to see what Is written abroad about your coun try simply feel flattered that you bothered at all to deal with us Stilt we folt the need to correct he more obvious standings Please accept our corrections as given In a friendly spirit 11 Sincerely name of class SehnceklothsSkoIc Denmark PS If possible we would like a copy of your paper If you print this Thank you Korean
