GDHS on the run coaches and Cosgrove are optimistic about the future Herald Sport Editor Before Karen Cosgrove and Donna arrived on the country and track circuit coaching for the Georgetown District High School Rebels il was hard to find enough runners to field a Almost 10 yean later Hal ton Hula la now recognized as a long distance track and cross country hotbed In those early years coaches MedcaUe and Cosgrote a ere novice instructors in the sport tryuig to encourage enough students to run and generate enthusiasm in running when at the time there was no prestige in Joining the team Donna Medcaif was bom to Guelpfa and was a student at Acton High School for one year pending the rest of her school days at Erin High School Both Donna who teaches English and History and Karen Cosgrove who teaches English say their track experience at school was limited to zone meets and field days with little practice sessions or students NO TRAINING There was no such thing as training says Knen Cosgrove was schooled at High School in Burlington where she was active mostly In team sports like Donna It was in 1973 that Karen Cosgrove arrived at the Georgetown District High School Karen made a pact with Donna who arrived a year later to teach volleyball If Cosgrove would help with volleyball would Medcalfe help Cosgrove with track and croon country other acts as a sounding board Tor new ideas and techniques they say APPREHENSIVE remembers being apprehensive in Cross country star Inn Clark Herald file photo Starting up together in the coaching duo learned heir trade through trial and error experiences reading endless reports and studies on longdistance running and by chatting with rival coaches ihemoretbey learned Cosgrove says It was especially important J that there were two people coaching because the J Donna and Karen Cos rove photo talking to one particularly renowned high school coach in North Bay during those early years because she was so In awe of his learn running record Now coaches from rival schools ask the CosgroveMedcalfe duo for their theories that have produced live consecutive team champion ships and a host of individual cross country and track stars now on athletic scholarships in the United States Mike Dixon was the first outstanding runner who emerged shortly after Mrs MedcaUe and Mrs Cosgrove took over In Dixon won the Canadian cross country championships He Is now finishing his Masters degree at a southern S university where he Is also coaching PROMINENCE g Ian Clark then entered the scene as the high school most prominent runner culminating an explosive four yean In Georgetown with a track scholarship to Berkeley University in California Last year Doug Smith did well to follow in Clark shoes by ending his distinguished high school career with a scholarship to a S university as did John Wamock How do the coaches explain their phenomenal success that has been so consistent Coaches from who have an excellent program are puzzled why they can t be as consistent as Georgetown Both coaches modestly say a large proportion of their success is due to the liaison among the feeder schools which is recognized by some to bo among tha best in Canada Students In Hal ton Hills know which high school hey be attending unlike Peel where students have a choice of which school they can altend This means Cosgrove and know which students will be joining their team The coaching duo have done their work In encouraging feeder students to participate In cross country The teachers have instructed in a number of clinics which many schools don encourage because of the extra work Involved The coaches from Ihe feeder schools particu larly Brian and Alice from Centennial and Paul Hynds from work closely together Another reason for the team success has to Novice Tier squad revisited SPORTS EDITOR NOTE In our Friday Dec IT edition a story about the Novice Tier 2 hockey team entitled Novice Tier show class against undefeated the young kids to grade seven show up to these sessions they say Coaching a coed team makes practice more fun for the coaches and kids the coaches say Morale is high on the team and tradition is built into cry runner Runners are encouraged to train on their own The coaches try to see that their team members can see their own success and Improvement and make sure no one is left out Pride is also an important factor for every Rebel runner SOCIAL RUN The two coaches have been instrumental in helping to form the recently conceived plan to build a track in Georgetown After one Sunday Social Run runners showed up to participate in a light jog and talk the formation of the Georgetown Track Club The new steering committee to study the bill lies of building a new track still the coaches say That will happen in the new year The teachers say the lack of a track facility has meant Georgetown has fallen behind the big schools Most affected are the hurdlers and the individuals who can get the feel of what the surface feels like CHAMPIONSHIPS With a track Georgetown would be able to host their own meets which they re not able to do now they say With a track club will be that their runners can compete at the Canadian championships something high school competitors can t do unless they belong to a club Both agree the biggest obstacle to building a track will be raising the money Coordinating the fund raising and keeping up the enthusiasm for what they realize could be a long period before the facility is built will be challenges too they agree With the interest in the community and the feeder schools a successful track and cross country teamcouldgoonfor another years The residents of Hi bean only hope the MedcaUeCosgrove team are a continuing part of our running dynasty Town Country time for phys activity as we have ever been In I see much more interest from the adult population in activity One just has to look at the Georgetown Hills area The Herald Do you as the department head try to stress certain areas that you think In the past have been overlooked la teaching physical education students In physical tton things have taken several different directions Some departments of education have become entirely York has an of the academic the activity and the recrea benefits We ve tried to put the emphasis In the first year program learning of teaching skills but part of that is the understanding of the physical in education The Herald Is there a certain theme far would to get across to them Dr They should be thinking about the Individual There are many different activities that have many different benefits but It can be gained In many different sort of ways There is no one way that It is successful for everyone and therefore they have an obligation to try to
