original ly meant to pay for the demolition of the old Acton town hall wont be used for toe buildings restoration Almost three years ago council agreed to put the demolition money in a reserve fund as Acton groups organized fund- raising campaigns like the lottery to pay for restoration Part of the original was used last year to hire a consultant to find out If the ball could be restored Later when council decided to tear the building down the remaining money its initial role Only councillors Tom Hill John McDonald Dave Whiting and Ross favored using the money to help restore the building under the proposal accepted by council earlier Monday night The rest agreed that If Acton are to restore the building they would have to do so without town money Ira quite confident that the people of Acton can restore the building or they wouldnt have made the proposal in the first place Coun Phil Carney said Town budget chairman Harry Levy argued that in an era of fiscal restr aint he Is not prepared to see the money used for restoration Had council supported the proposal to use the funds for restoration It would have first recover ed the to It coat the town to hire consultants and lawyers to argue its case before the provincial Conserva tion Review Board two weeks ago The fund la now estimated at Just over The board eventually determined that the balls historical designation should remain leading to town councils Monday to save the from demolition Coun Pam Sheldon argued that if the town granted the money at most in tax money would have been used in the restoration Along with the remaining in the fund she called the buildings sale at a loss for taxpayers During a 00day period which ended in April there were no Didders for tbe building at the town asking price of Knechtel remind ed councillors that con tributing tbe to the building would be some what of an Investment under the arrangement endorsed by council the town could buy back a follyrestored and there fore
