Orchard ravaged by deer farmer bemoans syndrome Herald Special If deer are to be con trolled like other farm pests without resorting to a hunting season the only solution would be to change ministry of natur al resources regulations a Hal ton farmer says Mac Trues a fruit representing the grow- i the agri- committee says that al though he personally suffers heavy crop damage because of deer he can sympathise with those who oppose deer hunting because they feel It isnt safe in an area with as large a population as Mr Trans says the Act which elevates deer above other pests must be changed so that farmers can do away with ihem as they do other destructive The problem with that is Best Armistice supper Poppy Drive in 1952 LEGION LINES president with Flecks and J Murphy replacing Harry Hale KIDS EVER THROWN A SNOW SNAKE Come to Wildlife Centre near Campbellvllle this Sunday Jan from 1 to 3 pm and try this sport popular among our native Canadians and pioneer voyageurs the Bambi syndrome associated with gentle beautiful deer Mr Traas said in con sulting with the MNR some time ago about pro blems with deer and possible solutions he learned he could buy a dog and chain it in the orchard but he couldnt let It run loose He could also paint all his trees if It werent impractical I can legally poison any rabbit or mice or even a dog that comes on my property and causes problems he says but I cant hurt one hair on a cute little deer The ministry seems to be conscious of the special status deer have but they dont dare tackle public opinion to do anything about the situation Mr Traas says he has encouraged hunters dur ing the controlled hunts in the past two years and never had a more cooperative polite crew than they were to deal with Despite his underlying sympathy for hunt oppo nents who wrote regional council stating their oppo sition would continue because hunting isnt safe in such a builtup area as Mr Traas put forward a resolution recommendation that under the present system deer hunting is necessary in and should be continued The recom mendation will be for warded to regional council Courtesy Mercury Do you know someone who deserves a medal If you know someone who
