By CHRIS Aagaard Herald SUrfWrlter Last year the North Halton Meals on Wheels organization doled cut 300 hearty dinners to grateful residents unable to cook for themselves In recognition of the organization s efforts its executive Invited Meals on Wheels volunteers to a special anniversary dinner last Tuesday night Its been eight years since the Meals on Wheels chapter In the area after a group of service club represents lives got together The first meals were ma do at the Georgetown and Dis Memorial Hospital but as the demand for service grew meal prep aration moved to Milton Centennlol Manor for sen citizens Our clients are mostly referred to us by doctors and public health nurses Meals on Wheels board of directors chair man Ruth Poullos said Meal recipients are carefully screened for diet requirements accommodating people who need special meals WEEK LONG Many recipients get meals five times a week and the organization Is planning a seven day program Meals are generally delivered between noon and l When they arrive clients sit down to soup meat and vege tables bread and dessert Seniors Mrs noted often find the meals large enough to split Into two portions saving the balance for supper Volunteers may each spend an hour a week making sure that the meals arrive on time and fresh Meals ore driven up from Centennial Manor and at various rendezvous points arc divided into cars In each car the driver is accompanied by a runner who does the the meal to the door Cole man coolers keep the cold items cold and the warm items hot in the hour it takes to deliver 10 meals CARING The volunteers are verycaringpeople Mrs Poullos said It nice to for seniors to know that someone Is coming who cares about them Without sacrificing the quality of food Meals on Wheels tries to keep the costs of meals down No one Is turned down because they cant pay for their meals but there arc clients who can afford the service If you would like more Information on the
