the HERALD Home Newspaper of Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown Ontario PAUL J TAYLOR Publisher and General Manager DAVE BOB LIGHTBOURN Editor Advertising Manager PHONE 877 2201 Second Matt Pace SECTION A THE HERALD April 1IH United Way cant be rushed Burlington Mayor Bird has been expounding the virtues of a Halton United Way recently adding pressure to the United Way Task Force His aggressive nature at regional council meetings does not help his credibility or those around him who seem impatient that it should take so long to form a United Way for Halton The farreaching implications of Hills joining into a United Way must be more than a marriage of con venience for regional councillors Time must be taken by all parties to properly ex those who have opinions about fundraising for charities in Halton Such an important Issue does not warrant simplified approaches Two weeks ago the region approved grants totalling 700 for the UW task force to be administered by the Halton Social Planning Council The grants are on a one time basis only with for the promotion of a Halton Hills United Way In the coming months representatives will have to be convinced that a United Way can indeed work fruitfully in our community Task force chairman Jams Sheridan has the right idea when he says the community has to sup port a United Way and threats of freezing grants at 1984 levels just won The United Way has made tremendous strides in helping community organizations but certain tears and suspicions must be put to rest Groups who participate in United Way mustfeel that services won t be duplicated that funds collected can be accounted for and their individual group needs can be looked after Hills prides itself on our volunteer organizations and their support is needed if a United Way is formed for Halton Lets not hurry the process along leaving behind our most important resource our volun teers Jesus enters Jerusalem By Rev A DONALD LEE St Stephen St Jena This Sunday begins the holiest week In the Christian yearly cycle It begins with triumphal entry Jens into Jerusalem We see him riding into the as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords Tbe people of Jerusalem throw branches in his In order to spread a carpet for Many Christian churches In our area and in Canada will celebrate this event by the blessing of palm fronds or palm crosses These palms will be taken to the sick in hospital placed on religious pictures or mounted behind crosses In tbe homes of lira faithful and alas In some cases put In bottom of a drawer and forgotten Jesus enters Jerusalem in another sense this Sunday He enters it as beginning of bis suffering for all mankind Another name for Palm Sunday Is Passion Sunday as Inmost churches the reading has to do with Christ a suffering Passion la just an old Latin word that means suffering But Jesus suffering Is a suffering with a purpose It Is not for its own hero and certainly not so ha- may be pitied Jesus suffering is no lest real Ills painful lonely and demanding but filled with hope and promise for Jesut enters Jerusalem to suffer on our behalf There to no turning back be Is fully committed to do the Father a not for himself not for status not even to begin a new religion but for you- and for me Whoever believes In bis name is saved Let us accept him as Lord of our life on a dally basis In thankfulness for his acceptance of sinners In a fallen world Grateful parents feel GDHS spirit is alive and well Dear Sir Last Thursday even ing tbe John Elliott Theatre was of a debghtful evening of entertainment which brought back shades of our school days when Tbe almost full bouse was treated to sixteen acts ranging from slapstick comedy routines to ballads piano solos and beau tiful choral music The swinging rhythm of tbe high school band made us feel like cutting a rug All of Ibis was accomplished by students Of GDHS at their second Variety Night Their efforts and those of the two able emcees together with the backstage crew all students enabled them to contribute in excess of to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation No doubt a major part of the success of this evening was due In no small way to efforts of those teachers who gave then- time exper tise end encouragement to these students At we are negative press from same areas about students and teachers It la like a breath of fresh air to know that school spirit aura and at GDHS A tip of hat and a big thank you from two parents Write us a letter The Herald welcomes letters to Queen Ont- OttoJelmck Member of Parliament Parliament Buildings Queen Pope limit options for the new Liberal leader Ottawa Report By Stewart Ottawa The Herald OTTAWA All things being equal the new leader of the liberal party who will be crowned on June would want to call an immediate general election to cash in on all that glorious publicity surrounding the leadership convention That exactly what Pierre Elliott did in 1MB and we know bow well that worked as be was swept Canada on relentless waves of Tbe outcome of that vote following the created at tbe leadership convention was a foregone conclusion So we could normally expect successor to try performing tbe same stunt perhaps allowing a couple of weeks for a smooth transfer of power putting some fresh face In cabinet and theh asking tbe Canadian people for a mandate But there are problems this time both the Queen and the Pope are coming to Canada this year and neither one can become remotely associated with any election campaign And with the Queen coming in July and the Pope in September that clearly limits the options available to a new prime minister WON The Queen is scheduled to be In Canada from July to 27 a longerthanusual visit to take part In birthday celebrations In the provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick and the dty of Toronto She will also tour Manitoba The firstever Canadian visit by a Pope will take place between Sept and Neither would come to tbe country If an election campaign were in progress And can you Imagine any new prime minister assuming respontlbill ty for cancelling either visit for the purpose of winning an election Not too The cancellation of the Queen visit would pose enormous problems for us in areas she is scheduled to visit says a senior Liberal Can you imagine how voters In Toronto might feel If we cancelled the Queen for an August election and then welcomed the Pope in September And as for cancelling the Pope visit for an early fall election he went on just forget it Just forget It entirely Since dose to half the country Is Catholic 1 suspect be to once again correct SEEMS REASONABLE So since It lakes roughly seven weeks to bold an election after the dissolution of Parliament the current guesses seem to revolve around a November vote with he announce ment coming soon after Pope leaves Canada The alternative would be a winter campaign an election must be held by tbe spring of and that not an appealing thought tor any leader Furthermore economic conditions not to mention voter morale are usually at their worst during the winter months A November election would also catch a bit of the residual hype from the June convention assuming enough Is created At tbe very least the new leader would still be regarded as the freshest face on the political scene Of course any number of unfore seen crises could Intervene to force postponement of a late fall vote and we might yet witness a campaign on but at tbe moment all the talk around Ottawa seems to centre on a November general election And all things being considered It seems reasonable enough Open invitation to meddle Queens Park By Derek Nelson TORONTO Forgive me If I don Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada Whatever bis persona qualities and I know nothing of man himself at a political and Judicial level be was a symbol of the wrong direction country Is going today He stood for a Supreme Court that notonlywouldlnterpretlaw but which would use those Interpretations to enforce its own vision upon Canada of what the elected representatives of the people favored put It this way It Is too easy for judges to say that If the needs to be changed that is tbe responsibility of parliament A judge who understands tbe common law must be able to take account both of precedent and of prevailing social conditions And since prevailing social conditions can mean anything tbe Supreme Court has an open Invitation to meddle in almost any political matter MUCH CHANGE One fawning editorial praising Laskln legacy said he saw court a duty to go beyond law to Interpret tbe statutes in a way consistent with genuine social Justice And since one nun s justice Is another roan tyranny it leaves door open to all kinds of menacing Take the following In IBM be dissented on a ruling In a famous case where the court said a woman who divorced her husband bad no legal claim to any part of the family ranch Now one may agree that the law as It stood was unfair tbe woman should have shared In the assets In that case parliament should change the law however favored tbe American approach of using some would say bending existing law to pursue his own particular social agenda In this case financial equality for women in marriage SOCIAL ISSUES It Is a slippery slope Down the road we shall see the courts deciding on issues such as whether abortions are legal But why should these decisions be made by people not just unelected but in tbe main appointed by the federal Liberal Party And this Is no Irrelevant point In a country where the federal Liberals under Pierre are widely perceived to be Interested In enhancing the powers of tbe Ottawa government at tbe expense of the provinces famous case In which Laskln participated perhaps Illustrates this usually ignored aspect of the court power to rt our future t being Trudeau unilateral of the Constitution MUCH SUPPORT A minority both ConservaUve appointments made In John Dlefen- days thought actions illegal and unconstitutional A majority all Liberal appoint menta thought It unconstitutional but legal thought it both legal and constitutional Interestingly Laskln denied that Ibe view of tbe Supreme Court as a federal institution had any validity To him it was a national Institution for all without purely federal alle giance The record reads otherwise Who other than the Prime Ministers office in Ottawa chooses the men and women to sit on Supreme Court No political institution especially the provinces advises and consents to these appointments No wonder a lameduck Trudeau Insists he appoint Laskln a success- THIRTY YEARS business man William George who operates Television married Miss Georgette of Brampton last week at
