Centennial librarian Ethel honored for year service Herald Staff Teaching In a one room school meant less discipline problems says a Centennial School librarian wrapping up a career In teach Ethel was honored Thursday night at a dinner reception held by the Ele- Teachers Association in Mlllon The sandy haired started her teaching career In a one room school In Prince Edward Island where she taught eight grades There were few discipline problems because wo were almost like a family at school Mrs said The teacher was part of the community OLDER The older children would work with the younger ones listening to their reading because he teacher t have the time to A girt Mrs Rlddell taught three years in the oneroom school before marrying an Ontario man and moving to the Toronto After her seventh child was born she started teaching again picking up her career at a oneroom school on Fifth Lino called School The school near Kelso Con servation Area closed three years later Mrs then started at Public School on falgor Road when It was a newly opened six room school ONEROOM had absorb ed all the neighboring little oneroom schools into it As Mrs said there was a great deal of growth In the at that time There she taught Grades 4 and over the yeirs and after taking library courses set up the school library when the school expanded In 1974 sit years later Mrs came to Centennial Public School as libra She occasionally tenches a class but her chief role in the school Is that at librarian Over her 10 years at Centennial Mri has seen in role of the librarian in helping leichers and changes in the use of the library Today all the Centennial have one reading period a which means the library has to supply a lot of books to keep up Centennial library has about hardcover and over paperback novels One thing I really pride myself on is that children here all rinlly like to read Of course I can take all the credit for that she smiled Children don t read hardcover novels any more however They sit on the shelf Mrs Rldd ell commented because they re associated with school Instead paperbacks a preferred Judy and books are with the girls and venture stories with the boys she said It s but
