be that only the wealthy can afford such ser vices There are a little 50000 licensed spaces of which un der 50 per cent are subsidized parents have to pay the full shot for the remainder an average of a week With almost a quarter of a million children needing the service something has to be done In a report to the provincial legislature the standing committee on social development has recommended several options First the report recommends that more spaces be provided and there should be more subsidization from the municipal provincial and federal governments Secondly employers should be encouraged to provide more day care service for their employees possibly through tax incentives There are only about 20 in the province now providing this service The committee also recommended that the revise the laws giving women more time off in the form of sick leave when her children are ill Schools should also become involved staying open later and opening early to supervise children of working mothers It would behoove new premier Miller to take this report to heart and start some of the revisions The new minister of community and social services said recently Either we take the action required to en sure the provision of a range of reliable child care services at an affordable price or we risk losing many of the gains women have won and endangering the economic indeoen of families Courtesy Erin Advocate His joy was Jesus most Christian music That was not because he was employed as church musician By desire and design by con and conviction he wanted his music lo be understood as joyful Christian music He wrote It is music for true Christians It Is opposed to fear despair and melancholy quoted in Bach by Eva Mary and Sidney Grew Even the titles of works show his Joy in Jesus One of his most famous is Joy of Mans Desiring One of his most obscure works recently rediscovered at Yale University is Jesus My Joy The television report of the dis covery did not mention that fact Bui when a page appeared on the screen the title was very plain to see Bach joy in Jesus Was true Christian joy He rejoiced in the fact of his salvation by Jesus Christ Jesus died Tor Ihe sins of the whole world God forgives sins for Jesus sake That Is Christian Joy That was Bach a Joy Bach compositions triumphantly proclaim many Christian themes He praised the Trinity three divine Persons in one divine Being He praised Jesus as true God truly incarnate He rejoiced in the real presence of Christ body and blood In the Lords Supper He stressed importance of pure doctrine Bach is in heaven now where his music would direct our thoughts His joy In Jesus Is perfect and complete The only celebration of his music that would please him would bo one that exalted Jesus not Bach To God alone be glory By JOHN At manuel Lutheran Church Who is the greatest figure in the history of music There is quite a consensus among experts about his prominence It is not Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley it is someone who never even Imagined rock It is Johann Sebastian Bach People wiltforget Prince and the Beatles But as long as there are keyboards and choirs the musical world will remember Bach His three hundredth birthday March will be celebrated around the world Newsweek reported Bach is not a bygone figure dimly perceived but a living presence to whom almost every thing in music past and present is somehow indebted December 1984 Many true stories reveal his brilliance as a performer Many accurate evaluations praise his genius as a composer But all the commendations and commemorations are missing the main point if they do not stress that Bach intended his music praise the Lord At the beginning of a com posit on Bach often wrote I J That stands for in nomine Jesu In the name of Jesus He regularly writing SDC That stands for soli Deo gloria to God alone be glory Bach music was first and fore- Ambulance cuts through the night ROBIN When the pagers at Georgetown Volunteer Ambulance Service blasted away at was Informed it was Just a check and felt more curiosity than anything else At 10 when the was different story a veteran of nine yenrs called dispatch to find Ihe location and nature of the incident while Cocking had vehicle number 231 out of the enrage and ready Running the stairs and scrambling Into the rear of the ambulance I had barely fastened my watch ing Ihe emergency ijlghts reflect from passing scenery The radio suddenly crackled a message thai department was on the scene and Cocking told me we were on our way to a MVA motor vehicle accident on As the scene the Dement turned to wonder I sure If I really wanted lo be a spectator lo badly injured people let atom ride In the back of the ambulance with them on the radio returned with tin message that the whole car was now engulfed in flumes All 1 could think about was the extent of injuries and how and fclv In would handle the situation As we turned onto fire trucks and police come into view with a mass of flashing lights and a cloud of smoke drove Hit as close to the accident scene as possible without getting in the way of the fire fighters and the two volunteers momentarily disappeared amongst firemen and police A car on the north shoulder of the road could only just be visible by the smoke pouring from it Firefighters to have the situation under control a disgrace Georgetown Chamber to NORMAL politicians Busines group booming What happening in the wake of he Chamber of Commerces BIG Business in Georgetown on Many may have forgotten the Chamber s bicentennial effort In June last year But there probably just as many people who have gained new respect for the local Chamber The mammoth undertaking took months or planning Involving dozens of merchants and professionals who donated Iheir time to the project Besides a birthday dinner with Bill Davis as guest speaker coins of Georgetown were sold and a threeday exhibit profiled the business diversity of George Kennedy grown up settlement In the the Chamber has gained more than the respect of curious onlookers The Chamber grew by members lost year about half that number signed up so they could participate in the BIG Celebration exhibits Within the Chamber ranks there is new enthusiasm for the tasks at hand Says president Dave Morale has Increased We re a pretty cocky bunch now The transition actually started before BIG but the Chamber seems to be getting stronger and new blood is administrating changes former president Doug Penrlce restructured the lines of authority which provided a more organized meeting arrangement says Mr Kentner Under Mr Kentner who ends his second term this spring as president monthly meetings were changed to twice a month last year Where docs the Chamber go from here Financially the group has a lot more going for it The sale of coins from the BIG Celebration netted about in profit from coins purchased by the community Although the Chamber budgeted for a K loss on the actual three day celebration in June the BIG Celebrati on did make money sparked some awareness of what the Chamber can do when it puts Its mind to it BIG was able to translate that increased visibility into new member ships a winter wonderland reasonable to expect a 10 per cent profit on their expenditures of 000 for the project or That means coupled with revenue from new memberships the Chamber is much stronger money wise than ever before It couldn have been done with a tot of support from merchants and professionals who offered their time and materials for free in support of the project the chamber president adds With new members and a healthier looking bank account the Chamber can look forward to a bright future One of the Chamber long range has been endorsed is the acquisition of a permanent facility It s probably something that won be done for about three years Former Herald publisher Walter houses the Chamber office now in his Queen Street home Mr would like to sec the Chamber expand into a group more active in local government to advise and challenge our local leaders Last year the Chamber showed some leadership in making policy statements on behalf of their members They ve expanded their printing of the annual Chamber of Commerce directory from 10O00 to 13 and distributed them to more area A logo has been chosen to officially represent Chamber activities There lots of ideas floating about and a number of programs just waiting to gel off the ground It sounds as If the Chamber has the people to pull them off too THIRTY YEARS AGOR J is asking for trouble Snow snow beautiful snow is everywhere It Is lovely to look at but not delightful to shovel My dear husband decided to do his shovelling from the garage roof Unfortunately the ladder and roof parted company Just as he was suspended in between them Damage one broken right wrist Treatment the usual cast and sling combination and most definitely no shovelling I have two teenage children so the entire burden has not fallen upon me Unfortunately they seem to manage to be at school or at part time jobs when the snow plough comes gaily down Ihe street depositing knee deep boulders of Ice and snow back into the driveway I have Just cleared Don get me wrong I know the streets must be cleared What profile me to clear a driveway a clogged street But one day I trudged out four times to redo the bottom of my driveway began to believe that the plough was bringing snow from other streets just for special deposit at my house Another problem I have with winter is walking I am not a joyful walker I do not particularly enjoy times However I know it Is good for me I do It for that reason This time of year benefits such as exercise you receive arc outweighed by the dangers you face If it Is cold you stand a good chance of slipping on an Ice patch If it warms up and slush forms the courteous drivers of our town will make sure you are wearing a patina of slush as they whiz past you splashing If the home owners have shovelled their sidewalks for you the ubiquitous snow plough will have built up a mountain for you to climb at every street comer It Is said
