they are missing out on what I feel is the best lime of year for crosscountry skiing They are missing the exquisite joys of spring skiing The snow may be melting but look a little further In the bush There is an abundance white stuff as a result of the constant grooming and packing of trails during the winter In many areas a base of centimeters remains on the trails Neither rain nor warm weather Is going to make It disappear overnight Sure there may be the odd bare spot but dont let that slop you On the writing of this I had Just returned from a fabulous outing to one of the local conservation areas I had left early In the morning and experienced two completely different siting conditions in one day On my arrival the groomed tracks had been frozen lo a glaze overnight perfect for a fast workout J was alone the smelts and sounds of spring The birds were chirping and the streams were busting over their banks the water falls at the various dams sounded like miniature general Ing stations The maple trees were being tapped for maple syrup the perfect stillness was awesome and the adrenalin started to flow After I laced on a generous portion of jackrabblt Ulster wax I was about to start when I heard a loud barking sound When I looked up in the sky I soon realized the barking came from a flock of Canada Geese They were humungous birds winging their way across the sky In grandiose fashion I wanted to yell out at the world to express I did start to talk to myself as a matter of fact with the question where are all skiers I received no answer Suddenly I withdrew into a greedy mood After all I had the trails all to myself The trails were all mine I wouldnt have share them with anyone on this beautiful spring morning For once I wouldn have to yell track or stop and lend waxing assistance to a novice My selfish desire for unlimited pleasure made me thing I should keep these perfect conditions secret from the world I had it all to myself I hoped it would remain that way I suddenly awoke from my comatose state and look off with jackrabblt on my shinny boards I glided over the tracks like a speed skater my wax working to perfection I felt like I could beat Pierre Harvey and Bill Koch with both hands lied behind my back The crusty slick racks were perfect for the diagonal stride for skating for double poling and ideal for the PeakerPump high I hoped would last forever Even the downhills were faster than I had ever seen them As I rounded one hair pin turn at high speed while holding my luck position I imagined I was Ken Read or Franz competing in
