the HERALD i Community Veteran canvasser heads 85 campaign for Cancer Society ByDAVEROWNEY Herald surr A veteran canvasser has been named as the 85 campaign chairman for the Halton Hills Unit of ihc Canadian Cancer Society Murt Allison will be directing the annual campaign for funds dur ing he month of April A farmer business man and local hydro commissioner Mr Alli son has been helping the cancer society for about six years About people involved in he campaign will be trying to raise about to help fight cancer Thats about a 10 per cent increase from what was raised last year he said New this year Is a canvassers appreciati on nighl April 1 singer Patricia Ann McKlnnon Ms McKlnn on who has cancer in the remission stage will speak to canvassers and a movie will be shown The next morning breakfast chairman Paul Armstrong will be a host for a kickoff break fast at the North Hlaton Golf and Country Club beginning at 30 a When canvassers are going door to door asking Tor financial assistance the only thing they can offer in return is inor mat ion Mr Allison said Three brochures about cancer will be dropped off and the information may be of value to the person who answers the door or a member of their family he said People have to be made more aware of the need to check for cancer while it is In its early stages Mr Allison said ALLISON Residential canvass ing went up 10 per cent in January It didnt have much of an effect on parents A supervisor in the regions childrens ser vices department said parents who paid full fee for day care continue to pay increased rate Rates for a full day in regular program went from 30 to In July they go up to 51 Diane Ayliffe said no full fee parents request ed subsidization because of fee increase About twothirds of children at the three regional day cares are subsidized depending on their family income and expenses The province and fede ral governments pay 80 per cent of subsidy cost and the region remaining 20 per cent I dont think youre going to see an impact until you see the actual per diem Mrs said By actual per diem she meant the actual cost of day care Right now the centres are charging less than actual cost of the care The region is phasing in the Increases and should be at the actual rates in July 1986 Director of social ser vices Debbie Oakley told members of the regions administration and finance committee last week that she es a shift from fullfee to subsidized parents with the rate increases She said the rates are becoming prohibitive In families where there Is more than one child at
