Herald photo Men escape serious injury after chemical explosion By ROBIN BAKE WELL Herald Staff Two young men escap ed serious Injury but were admitted Georgetown District Memorial Hospital with burns after a container of gas Ignited next to them Steven Williams the owner of Halton Hills Radiator Service and employee Terry King were both admitted to hospital and released this week after the Thursday afternoon accident The men had been draining gas from a vehicles lank to check for a leak when the gas fumes were ignited by a pilot light under a chemical tank accord ing to Steven Williams father Mr Williams said the young men were not In bad shape and are pretty lucky Its a good lesson They should have had a door open for ventila tion he said Although Mr Williams was not at the scene he said the chemical tank would have been about eight feet away from where the gas was being drained The chemical tank Is heated by a natural gas pilot light to keep the chemicals warm because they clean bett er at a higher tempe rature when checking for leaks he said Mr Williams said Course explores child abuse Parenting the Abused Child will be the subject of a second 8week course offered by the Halton Children Aid Society Beginning April and ending May the course is to be offered in the evening from 7 10 in response to requests that it be made available to those who are working or for couples who want to attend together The first 8week session of the course was offered in the afternoon The course explores the history of abuse In society dynamics of the abusive family the child s for 20 years Herald Stiff A recent survey of townspeople shows a slight majority per cent favor setting up a United Way in Hills The idea was opposed by per cent or people taking part in the and Pennock survey The survey was under taken by the Voluntary Funding Assessment Committee and looked into the feasibility of setting up a United Way in Hills Those people who supported having a Unit Way in town felt It would result in more local services M per cent more convenience per cent and greater efficiency In fund raising per cent Opponents felt they wanted to choose which agencies to support themselves per cent felt the present situation was fine per cent or felt that a United Way was an inefficient way of raising funds per cent Asked what effect they felt a local United Way would have on the level of donations In the community only per cent felt it would increase donations AboutBpercentfeltlt would have no effect MORE STORIES ON UNITED WAY while another 23 per cent didnt know what would be the impact of a Hills United Way An IB per cent of respondents believed donations would decrease If a local Unit ed Way was established The survey also looked at the attitudes of local businesses getting responses from manufacturing distributing and service establishments Asked if they would like to see a United Way In Hills per cent of them were either undecided or didnt know Favorable responses came from 33 per cent with another at per cent opposed Only 15 per cent of businessmen believed a United Way would Increase the level of donations Twentyeight per cent felt It would have no effect and another 17 per cent felt it might result In a drop in donations Should there be a Unit Way per cent of businessmen indicated theyd be willing to post publicity or the campaign and per cent said theyd make a corporate donation The survey found the support for a United Way was strongest among the smaller businesses which due to their size tend to make donations It was weak she came to Laurel near Orange- to work as a mothers helper for Ernest and Richardson After their grew up Miss Mullen as she was then was asked to work as a companion for Mrs John Wriggles worth grandmother of Evelyn Bailey in the Georgetown area She was kind of like an older sister to me Mrs Bailey told The Herald When my grandmother died she helped my mother and stayed with us until she Mrs hus band died two years ago after a lengthy hospital slay because of a stroke He was a farmer who until he retired years ago used to manage a 100 acre farm on Line There cows and horses and hens on that farm and Mr sold cream They never had a tractor I think He did a lot of the hard work by hand former neighbor Marjorie Wilson said They were married Just before the Depression in 1929 so they had to work hard to make progress Used to hard work Mrs could be Been shovelling the snow in front of her home even this winter Even though she had no family of her own she was always interested and pleased in every body elses success Mrs Wilson said She was always glad When the farm was sold the couple moved to Ash grove where they built a little brick bungalow on Sidcroad 10 next the Fred Bames welding shop She enjoyed her little home Mrs Wilson said A thoughtful person she would always remember the birthday of Mrs Wilson s My children were probably the closest thing to children she ever had Mrs Wilson said A private person she kept to herself but was also a friendly soul Always ready to do something for somebody else she didnt like Impose on others when it came to anything she needed Mrs Bailey said Every week she would take a taxi to down town Georgetown where she would do her grocery shopping and drop off her newspaper copy at the same time Lots of people volun leered lo help but she wanted to look after herself Mrs Bailey said Mrs led a quiet life and rarely missed a Sunday at Hill- crest United Church really good living woman Her church was very vital to her Mrs Bailey said She belonged to the United Church Women group and was a life member of the Women Institute Always a willing worker she never com plained Mrs Bailey and Mrs Wilson both said Mrs Bellboddy enjoy reading and garden and used to put food out for the birds whom she enjoyed watching and In the summer she cut the lawn herself 1 used to call her every night because I knew she was I was too Mrs Wilson said
