service in the Georgetown Red Cross Sophie says some people don realize what the Red Cross does in the community Mrs explains the Red Cross is involved in emergency responses blood donor clinics SOPHIE ECKROTH applying sick room equipment water safety programs first aid instruction and fun and fitness classes for sen ore With 1 Red Cross volunteers In Halton Mrs has helped assemble the kits the canvassers use during campaign for funds month In March of every year Office work logging time cards taking care of mailing duties and her main volunteer work of keep Mrs roth busy with the Red Cross Most of the Mrs does is for the elderly and Involves doctors appointments although people without cars or unable to afford taxis are also helped with transportation She calls the service which has been in operation for about two years quite a blessing having been able to relieve some of the volume of needy she encounters Mrs was pre viously driving for the Children Aid Society before Joining the Red Cross She said the little children were too easy to become attached to and thus switched to the Georgetown Red Cross In reply to how much tune she spends active with the Red Cross Mrs said I dont know but I ve put In a lot of hours Mrs said not only does the Red Cross give her something interesting to do but provides a great deal of enjoyment in being able to help others It a very satisfy lng feeling the George town resident said By KELLY WILSON Herald Special When Peggy Shuttle- worth moved to Halton Hills she thought volun teering for Meals on Wheels would be a good way to get to know the town and meet new people Now four years later she Is the co ordinator of Meals on Wheels I find It very re warding to see the delight on the peoples faces when we bring he meals said Mrs Shuttle- worth who has acted as the coordinator for last twelve months Mrs a mother of two also volunteers at her childr en school libraries Meals on Wheels has volunteers Five volun PEGGY teersare needed a day to pick up and deliver the meals The service offers a full dinner of soup crackers bread a main course Including vegetables and dessert at for per meal Meals are delivered Monday to Friday Including all holidays except Christmas day The service caters mostly to senior citizens who either can get out to buy food or can t prepare meals for them selves Currently the service is delivering about to meals a day If the need far meals Increases the service would have to increase the number of volunteers by per cent to create third route to compliment the present two according to Mrs Shultlcworth New volunteers are welcomed In summer many of the volunteers go on holi day and more are required to keep the service going For Information call Recreation Department thanks their the post year In November of 19M a Christmas Travelers program ran In coopera lion with the Credit Valley Artisans and the Recreation and Parks Department This program was designed for individuals who required special assist in the creation of a craft The following people assisted In organizing and planning this very successful afternoon Edith Hackett Vandermieden Albert Also a very special thanks to Rosemary Oliver who volunteered the day of the program to provide individual assistance Diane Masters and Ken Key are two very dedicated people who assisted in Learn program this past winter Diane worked onetoone basis with a disabled Individual needed assistance In learning how to skate Both did an excellent Job Ken Key also leered in the Learn to- program His interest In skating brought him to the Memorial Arena every Thursday afternoon help teach children basic skating skills RESEARCHING HISTORY The Historical Society had a busy evening Wednesday night Those attending had the opportunity learn about researching land records Then members were given a tour of the Georgetown reference library archives which ore organized with the help and material from the Historical Society Special The Kinsmen Club of Georgetown is gearing one of their most successful fund raising projects for Cystic bras is The club has arranged with Cable TV to run a TV Auction live on Cable Monday May from to The Kinsmen annually raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis research is a genetic disorder found in children and as yet there is no known the Kinsmen Association got involved in raising funds for cystic fibrosis research 21 years ago the average life expectancy of a C child has gone from years of age to the mid tolate The Kinsmen have been canvassing local merchants for support and to date have collec ted over 100 items for the auction valued at over The largest and most interesting item Is the 1985 Ford Escort that retails for tax included John Perl manager of Capital Ford is providing the new Ford Escort well below dealer cost The vehicle is a sand beige door hatchback and has a four speed floor shift VCR rentals electric garden tiller chain saw even a BMX bike these are just a few of the Items up for auction and all from local chants A complete list of the items will be printed In the May issue of The Herald along with the telephone numbers to call the night of the auction During the auction the Items will be set out in sections for the audience to view and at end of each hour some of the items will receive the auctioneer gavel and will be sold The Kinsmen are ted about this special fund raiser for several reasons Although not a unique Idea It is new to the residents of Halton Hills In a project such as this everyone wins the merchants who dona ted the Items will receive free advertising during the auction the viewers who bid successfully will get a bargain on which they will pay no sales tax Also every success ful bidder will be eligible for a draw on an Item which la over In The Kinsmen Club Is in the final stages of secur ing the major prize and will announce it next week The Kinsmen have been working hard to make this not only a successful fund raising that the town is In need and Is getting shortchanged We want to eke the lead in equal allocation of resources Mrs Smith said We ere responding to a need in offering the program here The is also
