like work he said When you no on you don I want to see anylhing a sot in leu work was in Georgetown at Arena He and Leafs vicepresident were banquet held for he players In the Ontario mldgel I played here on the weekend Lame to Leafs hack in December of when lit was traded from Montreal inaditns defencemnn Gaston return received two draft picks A of Montreal had dreamed playing for I Cnnudlcns as a child But he Kind as a young hockey player he did not find Ihc idi hard take They weren t playing mi I wanted to pi hotkey No the trade t really bother Duoust was in the Montreal organization for three prior to the trade having spent his first In the minors He was a member Hit Nilionnl League squad the year he was traded to Toronto Since he has Joined Toronto Daoust has found fans to be quite demanding At first 1 enjoyed it but we been losing past few years and it Is hard lo listen to them jelling names at you The fans don t seem to give much support when you arc losing If pressure From the fans is difficult take there are others players must adjust to also There Is a lot media pressure In Toronto he said to players in other cities and they they never hardly see their Bui in Toronto there are six or seven guys tovtrlnt the and you have to watch what This ycir the Leafs finished lust overall in Ihe NHL Team captain Kick Valve who scored or inort the past three years scored just goals A lot of talk was and has been generated about Voives future with the hockey elub It is easy to be talked about all year said I would think It bothered Rick and his family and might have been a reason why he had a bad year But you not lo let talk like that bother iu If you arc going to be traded you are be traded There I lot you can do about it At age has spent the past six years in profi He said he can see how Mime players get depressed about being sent down minors after having ployed in the NHL This mass of humanity Is the Sunny Acre Far mi midgets after winning their game wilh The win gave Georgetown the bronie medal in the provincial tournament Herald photo DAN AND KING CI Georgetown Track Club On Feb we wrote our preliminary article on training Now we re only Iwonnd a half weeks away from the big day Sunday May is the Ottawa Marathon of the heavy training is over and we now enter ihe tapering phase of the 13- week training schedule The worst Ihing a runner can do is enter a race having trained loo heavily the last couple of weeks Let review schedule for the last three weeks and then explain how It works Runners must remember by week 11 your training Is over During week 12 or 100 minutes will be your longest run It should not be done at an excessively fast pace It hard to run a marathon injured The last long run before the marathon the lOOrun one week before is great confidence builder and a good setup run for a carbohydrate loading program The Jury is si ill out on loading but here is now it works if you want to give it a Iry After the long run Sunday before the manlhon eat no more carbohydrates until Thursday morning The theory Is the Sunday run depletes your available carbohydrates and by not eating any more for three days the body becomes a sponge walling for some From Sunday night till Thursday should eat normal amounts of protein and fats but minimal amounts of carbohydrates Therefore meals eggs and cheese are on On Thursday Friday and Saturday you arc supposedly primed for carbohydrate intake You might gel cranky by Wednesday but you can always abandon program if you comfortable Remember though not to overdo loadlngand gain five pounds just prior to the race Half the fun of running a marathon is he lasi week of training Because there l my long runs your legs become rejuvenated as does your altitude All your friends will call to wish you well and you II feel like you have the world by the till Bui don blow it after all your hard work Here arc few lips for your last week and the big day don t iry break m a new pair of shoes now enjoy jour meal the night before but don overdo It A good plate of pasta and bread is great don run the day before Your training is over enjoy the diy don any salty foods for three days before the race wear clothes lhat are well wom and you know feel comfortable lrink a of fluids prior to and during the marathon By ihe time you feel thirsty it will bo too late vaseline everything may rub Twentysix miles is a long way Apply to toes groin nipples and underarms If it sunny wear a peaked cap and lotion Dehydration and sunburn feel even worse after running miles when stretching before the race stick to your routine You 11 sec people doing wild and wonderful don I be swayed finally set realistic goals and have a good time The Track Club will publish results of the marathon for club members but if you re going down phone the paper and let us know how you did RUNNING SHORTS Sunday eight club members went to the Boston classic Six ran the half marathon and two ran the 10 K race a real nightmare It amazing how you con be satisfied wilh a slow time under those conditions Everyone recovered but Noxzema sales are sure to soar due to sunburn Canadian champ Dave Edge won the half marathon In one hour nine minutes from Goalie happy with year Now Newfoundland will play host to Thunder Bay in the bestof seven Cup championship final They Newfound land have a good team and will be lough to beat in Ihcir own rink Hut I also think if we would have won it would have been hard for a Icim to take four games in the best of seven from us in our arena said Looking back on the by Lock hurst said he was happy with what he and his club accomplished Everything turned out well he said didn get a good start to season in George town but when I came lo things seemed lo work out better Bui I II have to wait and sec about next year he said It playing hockey really takes up an awful lot of time I came up hard way spending two years in the minors so I ve seen the dark side I enjoyed it and it gave me experience I needed lo piny in NHL Bui there arc a lot of bus rides a big difference when you get to fly everywhere and stay in good hotels In NHL you get everything served to on silver platter and I wouldn want to go down in the minors The obvious goal for Daoust and his Maple teammates is to make the playoffs this incoming year ir they can he Is confident the ins will support the hockey club This year was a long year because we were playing catch up hockey It Is hard when you are in last spot 14 or 16 points out of the final playoff hut guess everyone has the same kind schedule I think if play more as a team and not as individuals we would be alright Wc could get in playoffs with a lot of hard work you get Into the playoffs anything can happen If you could get a few bounces you never know who you could end up beating out Tournament Ice Chips AND Muscle pull after playing in the bronze medal game Georgetown player Dave Bert rand was taken hospital with whit was first thought to be
