ive or weekend variety setting and attaining goals Is probably one of the most satisfying an athlete can experience Two Georgetown District High School GDHS faculty members know full feeling after cycling from Godcrlch to Acton last week Moe and Bab McKay bath trained hard for their ride for about four weeks averaging close to ISO miles a week On and off cyclists past three years the pair decided to attempt the ride and work towards realizing Its completion Our longest ride prior to that was about miles McKay said We dldn know what to expect on this ride We were most concerned with the physical things like cramps and fatigue had mapped the course being familiar with the area as his parents live in He said his last two trips there he had an opportunity to diagram the route Mostly the two travelled country roads through the southwestern portion of the province Of the eight hours both and McKoy spent on their bikes they soy only about one was spent on highways Both said they were happy wilh heir time for the ride adding they figured It would take them somewhere near hours to complete The stretches of construction were the toughest said There was one stretch of construction that was eight miles long that had sand mud and gravel which look us about an hour to complete Id say we worked harder in that hour than we did during the entire ride We were able o do IS miles the next hour to get back on pace he The hardest thing to leorn was probably pacing ourselves McKay said You can go out and physically attack the course youve got to keep a manageable pace The terrain on the ride was what both called a rolling hills type While being able to manage such geographical boundaries the pair admitted near the end of their ride fatigue began to set in We were tired when we got lo Osprlnge but when you can smell the end you suck It up said As much as finishing the ride In a boiler than originally anticipated was gratifying being able set a goal work towards it and then realizing It was the greatest accomplishment for and McKay It was significant for us In that we set a goal for ourselves and achieved it McKay said It was enjoyable to work towards and fun accomplishing it One of the most important elements in such a trip was having the bikes finely tuned Both riders said theirs were In lopnotch condition Olie Tuchcl of North Sports set up our bikes for us and did just a fantastic job McKay added Its Important to hove them ready and we felt confident on our bikes They had to run well said the ride or something like it could become an annual thing for the two bikers In the meantime though smaller monthly rides will likely be planned It gives you something to work towards each month and also maintains your fitness level said Pries remaining on as Eastern venture DAN RALPH Herald Sports Editor Kevin and Glenn Edwards will have some interesting stories to tell about their summer when school starts in September The two successfully completed their bike ride across Eastern Canada and the northern United States last week The mile venture took the Georgetown riders approximately four weeks to finish The cyclists travelled through Ontario Quebec New Brunswick Novo Scotia New Hamp shire Vermont and New York Stale before re entering Ontario and riding back to Pcaker IS and Edwards 17 packed all equipment on their bikes for the trip They carried changes of cloth as well as camping equipment and a tent which was their main place to bed down night However some of heir funniest Glories surround where they For example the two slept In a bus close to a drive- in an onshore boat In Maine that was far sale and near a local hang out for derelicts and bod Ihe chance of slaying In an abandoned home but decided when a case of Ihe spooks became loo much a handle It was- a funny feel Ing Edwards said about the abandoned home There I anyone there but we both had a feeling we wouldnt get much sleep so we didnt bother stick around There was just an eerie feeling about the place Despite being away from home for most of trip two still were able to keep in contact with their famlll Sometimes It was even on a personal basis Prior to leaving the two left a copy of their route with Glenns parents The Edwards travelled the route and caught up with the cyclists in Edmunds ton New Brunswick It funny because I know my dads and when I heard It there I didnt really believe it the younger Edwards said My parents wanted to know If we wanted to go home but we told them that we didnt The two also had to do some unusual things In order get food We went clamming In New Brunswick Scotia said When the tide goes out you go out and dig the clams out Some times when grabbed them they would squirt a liquid at you Glenn got squirted a lot As well as having to work for food and lodg ing locations the riders had to overcome some tough geographical barriers along the way I soy Mount Wash was the highlight It was like eight miles of Hungry Hollow Wo cursed going up It but once we got to top It was so nice The duo were able to remain accident free with cars along the trip That doesnt mean hough that they came out completely unscath ed took a nasty fall early in the rip when he rode up Edwards lire Subsequently falling he suffered same deep scraps and cuts along his torso As for serious probl ems wilh their bikes Ihe cyclists were fairly lucky having just one flat ana a few broken spokes The flat didnt come until the later portion of the trip The major reason for the bike trip was an attempt by bolh to improve themselves cardlo vascular ly for the upcoming crosscountry ski season Both feel they are In good shape Ill still do some training but I feel really good and ready for ski season Peaker said and Edwards said they both feel the trip Itself went pretty well and thai they have no real regrets The last week It was starling to get a much but we werent going to give up We just wanted to get home Pcaker said We saw
