Show at the Library and Cultural Centre In Georgetown this October Is a challenge It means that the artist has to create and submit their best works These art works must be com pos It tonally accurate demonstrating unity balance and contrast and a good use of color line shape texture volume size and space They must also illustrate a good appreciation and understanding of the medium as well a unique or Interesting subject matter If It is an objective work To a certain extent the decision of the jury does depend on personal taste but with three judges on the panel with three different preferences the choices really are on merit first What Is really difficult for the artist like any one is that It hurts to have something on which you have worked hard being criticized With every good work of art created the artist leaves behind a little bit of his or her soul I think my worst experience with criticism was when I was talcing a watercolor course from Carl who worked with the Group of I hod just finished my first painting for him and he told me my tree looked like the rash on his stomach I wanted to crawl under a stone and die I After a while of moping and feeling sorry for myself I got angry I listened analysed and thought about what he had said Much to my chagrin he was The next painting I did Mr Schaefer selected as one of the best of the group The next problem of course after coming down from my high with visions of being a rich world renown painter was how to surpass my success Thus the process of personal challenge begins to have each work try to outdo the next in quality You dont to be discarded but at least you know that you can and will do better because of the knowledge youve gained from your failures Of course having a lemper helps too My one concern with some juried shows Is that you never hear the constructive criticisms of the judges In the case of Here and Now 05 John one of the hard working organizers assures me that a written report will go out with those works not selected Thus the learning process can continue and the artist can strive to do even better the next time With this opportunity to extend yourself I would like to present a challenge to all Hills artists In painting hanging drawing mixed media and prints Put your good foot forward submit good quality work and thereby make Here and Now a terrific success and a real challenge for the
