the HERALD Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established 1866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown 3Z6 Ontario GARNET COWSILL Publisher and General Manager ROWNFY 2201 J STEVEN FOREMAN Advertising Manager Page SECTION A THE HERALD Wednesday September IMS One less voice We lost one school board trustee in Halton Hills but critics have been strangely silent on this issue Through a complicated system of representation based on farm and residential assessment both Burlington and Georgetown lost a trustee to represent their area Town council voted Aug 26 to uphold the new boundary changes The move affects Burlington to a much lesser extend tint it does Halton Hills Before the change Burlington had seven school trustees while we had three plus a shared separate school trustee with Milton With only representatives for Halton Hills under the new system our region cant hope to have a strong voice at the school board level Compared to the amount of representatives at the regional level of municipal politics Halton Hills looks even more like a mouse beside an elephant At Halton Region Burlington has nine represen while Halton Hills has five that doesn include former Mayor Pete Pomeroy who is regional chairman Not only will Halton Hills be losing a trustee but we will also be losing the school board chairman Betty Fisher who represents Georgetown The fiesty trustee earned a position of influence as chairman It s fine to say that trustees don always look at con cerns from a regional perspective because most issues af feet the entire educational system But we re wondering whats going to happen when an important regional issue affects Hills like the upcoming consolidation study which is expected to close schools Will Burlington or Oakville support us How loud can 2 trustees roar Do you know enough about drug abuse Herald Special Parents do you know enough about drug abuse to discuss ft with your children this area all loo often Scotch parent age though he received his schooling in Edinburgh He married Agnes by whom he would have ten children In 1727 the young family sailed to Boston they spent a year at Concord Massachusetts moving on two years later to what is now Pembroke New Hampshire and James claimed that his family was the second to settle there and built the first framed house In 1732 the Suncook proprietors voted to build a log meeting house and six years later called the Ileverend Aaron a minster to the town Moore was one of the staunch Presbyterian leaders who objected that Whillemore refused to give them any satisfactory account of the articles of his faith that he would not Join with the Presbyterians and that he held that the Church of Scotland was not agreeable to scripture James was a leader of the Presbyterian cause He was known as Deacon Moore and sometimes preached But the Presbyterians of were not numerous enough to out vi the Congregationalism Only in did they form a separate Joined forces to re a minister together One of James sons was In rn In 1734 By the late 17503 or early nets he and his brother James had crossed to the west side of the Merrimack river to settle on Ten year rule of thumb TORONTO The consensus among media and other observers is that the Ontario I under David Peters unless they do something really dumb are In power for at least two more elections Ten years Is he rule of thumb So why then would anyone want to run for leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party doomed to opposition for all that lime BIG IGI1TS The Liberals have said they would da a lot L ttlc of it has happened yet And when it does there will be considerable controversy generated Peterson has yet to prove himself In crisis management probably the key list of leadership If he does the Tones are dead Beyond the three Tories already named the of contestants becomes mon problematic The two main restraints a candidate are his or her ego how will 1 look if I fare poorly and money it Is tougher to ralsi cash when you re simply running io Ih number two bui being good follower and a doubtful leader seats as they In the last election the have made it clear that he L are their favorites And the Liberal have made it clear they have no problems with implementing most policies in order lo keep it at party happy surprisingly rnay actually be more dales for Tory leader th lime than last Ambitious Northerner Alan Pope first 111 row his hat into the ring He likely in start with a solid block of rcfi anal delegates who back him as a f son And Dennis Timbrel who placed third In last race and who some me I could have won the provincial election for the Tones last is In for another run Ttu question mark Is Larry Gross man who ran a surprisingly close second to rank Miller last time Some observers such as my Press Gallery colleague Orland French say Gross man wanted to be premier rather than leidcr and with ihat position out of reach he retire to thccorporatclcgal world instead It so Hut most people expect Grossman to try again mply because politics Is never a sure thing and Peterson Is far from unbeatable The Liberal honey moon is more a consequence of the slow pace of government than anything The man who might Inherit Roy McMurtry substantial block of support if he decides to seek the job is Bob probably the most inlcllec tual of the current crop of senior Conservatives He II pull the socalled Red Tory vote Belle Stephenson is rumored to be considering campaigning The most loyal of the Miller loyalists the pity is she I run last time She d give the contest zip The Niagara Peninsula s Phil who held his Lincoln seat when many saw it Tailing the Liberals is another definite posslbili And then there are stories about outsiders Dear After a death memon es are supposed to be priceless gift for the family Not so in my case My memorlesare of the past fivesix struggling years of a young man my son in absolute confusion frustration and utter unhapplness A man who as a teen was Into health physical Illness sports and with a potentially reliable future when lowly and painfully It became only too obvious that there was some thing very disturbing and wrong about him He was suddenly behaving in a bizarre manner and we were Increasingly becoming afraid for him as well as afraid of him In our confusion and Ignorance ho was treated a bom in ably making matters worse We finally after more lhan a year had to accept he diagnosis that he was a schizophrenic He never knew that hit him and never did under stand the disease Was this not supposed to be any of his business It took me years to leam of this very com plicated illness and It seems that people still only have opinions but no solutions other than to keep these people on heavy medications that prevent them from func Honing properly As a result they live very unhappy threatened and frightening lives He woke up every day believing he was In constant danger and suffered almost every waking moment feeling unwanted and a burden Pity sympathy is not enough This was increasingly impossible to live with It is cruel and heart breaking for both patient and their families These people are not mentally retard they are terrified and little wonder We don t laugh at the pain of a cancer patient the coma or a diabetic the legs of a spinal Injury victim the seizure of epileptic But we do laugh at the symptoms of schizophre nia The delusions and hallucinations caused by dopamine dysfunction are a source of to us In his hopelessness he took his own lire and in such a horrific manner I feel certain he believed this to be his ultimate gift for us because he was always genuinely a very loving and caring person whose struggle should not have been in vain This Is a disease that can hit anyone It goes straight to the brain and caused him to believe that he was actually in danger and suffered the terror each of us suffers in unrelenting danger Hopefully knowing that with understand ing will come empathy and care for others Lois Richardson Help the distressed Dear Sir Imagine yourself in a lime of distress when you feel your nerves will break if you
