the Chamber of Commerce should be out there promoting the A survey conducted this summer of local businesses showed those who favored tourism wanted more signs up along Highway and Maple Avenue to direct traffic to the towns busi ness core They also wanted Glen Williams and Terry Cotta promoted wilh signs directing tourists to these areas Business owners said they would like to see a tourist brochure put out by the chamber with radio advertising and place ops around town It was noted that Georgetown per se does not have a major tourist attraction Asked if the Chamber should operate a tourist information centre per cent of all businesses surveyed said yes Some of those survey ed suggested the centre operate out of a Chamb er office with the help of the Georgetown District High School Marketing Club during the summer months The 19M BIG Busin ess In Georgetown Cele bration was considered a positive exposure by per cent of those who took part in It Of those who didnt participate 45 per cent said they would if a similar event were spon sored by the Chamber The Chambers survey comments that busines ses were very compli mentary of the BIG Cele bration Those who said the Business community and the community at large according to a summer survey of 505 local Survey results released last week showed that promotion and leadership are being looked for by the Georgetown business community from the Chamber Although the Chamber Is seen as active to very active by per cent of all businesses surveyed halt the businesses who dont belong to the Chamber said they were either unaware of the Chambers activities or that they thought the Chamber was inactive The survey included comments from Chamber members and nonmembers Over half of all businesses felt the Chamber communicates its activities to the community effectively Information supplied was available in per cent of cases and useful per cent of the time Businesses suggested the Chamber distrib ute a appealed to per cent of businesses who felt this service should be widely advertised and continually updated The directory and information booklet put out by the Chamber was seen as the most beneficial of all the services offered by businesses It was suggested these booklets contain less advertising and be more widely distributed The Chambers programs are currently financed by members fees and selfsupporting activities per cent of businesses would like that change Theyd fundraising instead Those who opposed fund raising said the role of the Chamber is to serve businesses and not to raise funds in the community Establishing an office for Chamber business got approval from per cent of all businesses Right now business operates out of the secretarymanagers home It was felt an office would increase the Chambers visibility and would make Chamber services used more often However businesses opposed to a Chamber office said It would merely add more expense and not be cost efficient They felt there wasnt enough demand for oh office and that Georgetown was too small give businesses more advance time for preparation Asked if the Chamber were to host a similar event would they parti cipate per cent of those who did participate in 1984 said yes Holding such an event once a year got support of per cent of respondents as compar ed to per cent for every two years The survey also touch ed on Chamber sponsor ed educational work shops asking if local businesses would take part in them It was found that GO per cent of all businesses replied yes they would attend It was suggested the Chamber offer entire courses rather than sporadic workshops and that workshops should be held evenings and Satur days Concern about all areas of government regulations was expres sed by per cent of all businesses surveyed Next was concern per cent over provincial regulations and per cent over federal and provincial regulati ons Only 11 per cent of those surveyed were unconcerned about government regulations Provincial tax regula tions and taxes were cited as the areas of most concern by businesses Asked to what degree they felt the Chamber should be involved in regional or municipal issues per cent of businesses indication the Chamber should be act ive 57 per cent or very active 28 per cent Only per cent of busi nesses felt the Chamber should stay out of muni cipal and regional issu- Comments were that as business represents the largest number of tax dollars It should have representation and that governments dont know business concerns Businesses surveyed indicated strong support of Chamber positions on municipal or regional Issues with per cent saying they had never been opposed to any Chamber position AC Phone has named In Last Wednesday a report from regional
