SECTION A THE HERALD Wednesday September Page PLAYING THE FIELD Roughriders had special mix Barbell never really had a burning desire to play professional football As a youngster growing up In Saskatoon Interests were baseball and hockey His prowess the ball diamond even earned him an amateur with Philadelphia Phillies But as fate would have it just one year after taking up football ended up turning pro Ironically some of his best memories In athletics came during the 10 years he spent as a receiver Saskatchewan During his career played with such Rider legends as George Reed Ron Lancaster Bill Baker Ed McQuarters and Tom Campana had an opportunity to meet with his former mates at the anniversary on the Labor Day weekend All of Ihose associated with the team since Us inception in 1910 were prestnt There was a kind of chemistry lamented Wednesday of the Rider teams he was on Every now and then there comes along a team with lhat chemistry and mix The guys ended up playing together as a family there were very few conflicts There was always that Everyone respected one another It was like the Pittsburgh rates and Philadelphia Flyers of the 1970 They might not have been the best teams but the players went allout for each other he said As part of the anniversary festivities the all time allstar team was announc ed Those players and management associates with Rider teams of the past voted on he selections Unfortunately wasn t selected lo the squad Looking the team members had special memories for some of those named Included were some of coach Eagle Keys fullback George Reed and quarterback Ron Lancaster George t the biggest fullback and e was supposed lo be too short and slow to ploy quarterback However bath guys loved life They played hurt all the time You knew they hurt and you tell yourself thai If they can l So could you They were leaders the type of people the young guys looked up to The Riders did a good job in selecting players who just after a pay cheque There was a pride In being a member of the ders Bald the community of Region had something to do with extolling the virtues of Rider Pride The community tried to get the players jobs In the offseason he said There was always Ihe warm family atmosphere that seems to get in the East People take pride In being from Saskat Westerners take pride In being from Ihe West Thai is many of the Americans still live San he said If there moment stood out from the rest it came in 1966 when the Roughriders wan their only Grey Cup title That year Saskatchewan an Ottawa Rough Rider learn lhat was a heavy favorite We were the underdogs said We weren even supposed to make the playoffs Overall the Riders made It to ihe Grey Cup rial four times In career Also he has one particular d stlnction that makes him unique among Roughnder receivers Late In the 1965 season Saskatchewan was playing B C Lions inBC ceding the win lo improve their chances and pivot Lancaster teamed up in the first quarter for a 102 yard touchdown that helped the Riders win the game Thai play was the longest pass completion in Lancaster career Eagle told me lhat I should have been selected for the all star team but I lold him that for me I was Just glad to have been a part of this learn for 10 years Just lo have been there was neat When I look back at 10 super seasons I Ihink for a guy who never wonted to play football be part of hat great team was a fond memory Barwell said But 10 years in the game was enough and when Barwell did retire ho did so after having his Till of the sport Now is involved with Athletes In Action as the Eastern Canada director A lot of his lime Is spent with many of today s players offering discipleshlp Two weeks after winning a Grey Cup which is he pinnacle for a football player you have to go out and do it all over again It I bring lasting peace and success There are things available that can break a player You hear about guys who have sold their Super Bowl rings because the game has broken them Through AA we show them that there are other things In life thai life can have purpose and meaning without a Grey Cup championship Twelve years ago when I became a Christian guys were saying that Barwell had gone off deep end I had just decided to march he tune of a different drummer Those same guys who said I was crazy ask mo about change in my life I grateful I played 10 years and happy with the way my 1 has turned Now if my basement flooded I d be the happiest guy In he world right Tonight last chance before late charge registration numbers low
