ELECTION UPDATE Micro owner a candidate After working on election campaigns for others Pan 6th hopeful for Ward 1 Johnston decided It time to kick off her own camp aign The 36 yearold mother of four la run rung for Ward 3 local councillor JOHNSTON ve been considering It seriously for over year Mrs Johnston said Its difficult to run against people you know except that I do believe I have something to give A former teacher Mrs Johnston Is now Involved in work dealing with micro computers and financial Norm Elliott Chairman of the Hills Library Board is the sixth candid ate running for town council In Ward 1 Mr Elli has lived in Acton all but one of his years NORM ELLIOTT sis Currently he lives at 112 Elmore with his wife Kate and his three children Thcrewosnever any reason to move away I was born here and ray w s family have roots in Acton he said As a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Mr she opened her own Ell to have members of the business The Micro Manager which operates out of her home Mrs Johnston sells small business systems and does consulting in the area of system analysis and design She has one full time and one part time emplo yee As well Mrs Johnston teaches computer programming and micro management courses at Sheridan Col lege She was asked to teach night school even before graduating from the college s micro management course I very good with figures and I enjoy it she smiled Tho Georgetown bom and raised woman has been a long time volunteer in the community working with organ izations like the Georgetown Memorial Hospital Canadian Cancer Society Red Cross churches and schools For the past six years Mrs Johnston has organized church servic es banquets fall color tours and entertainment evenings for seniors In the community She said her mother Bea Clark will be managing her campaign and her brother Dave Clark will be assisting with media coverage and scheduling This Is her first time running for public office Between 1970 and before Hills was created Mr Elliott was on Acton last town council I ve always been a concerned citizen he said Mr Elliott was on the committee of those opposed to the purchase of the Steven purchased in March of for to build a municipal complex he said This time around there ore a lot of Issues Three years ago you had to look for an issue he sold A major concern of mine Is the resolution of the tax disparity within Hills he said Acton taxes are highest As many incumbents step down his election there will be a new council which might neglect some of the old issues like tax equalization Mr Elliott said The best I can do is get on council and do my arguing from the inside he added Limited growth a per cent Increase in Actons population Is another of his concerns Everyone in Acton wants to see resident of HILTON since 1978 His daughter Dawn is a student at Acton High School while Cordon attends Middle School With his wife Dorothy they live In a house the candidate built located on Highway between the Fourth and Fifth Line Mr Hilton said he decided to run because he feels needs a re presents who lives In tho Ward and who will have Esquesing Interests in mind Born and raised in Toronto Mr Hilton has lived in Kitchener and the Maritlmes before coming to Hills He has been with the Toronto Metropolitan Police for years The candidate is currently a supervisor In downtown Toronto In his spare time Mr Hilton Is a photography buff and a part time farmer He also active as a member of the Acton Baptist Church the Acton Fall Fa r Board and he a volunteer worker In an area nursing home He has been a part of a citizen group involved with the needs of area youth and has also assists in minor sports Mr Hilton said his background which includes a working knowledge of the agricultural community under standing or urban needs and lion of the rural urban uniqueness will help him if he is elected The candidate said he has expert in listening to and dealing with the Appraiser wants Ward College and hes taking time social sciences at York University At Sheridan College he was trained in electrical electronic technology The firm he works for tests various equipment to ensure proper safety standards are maintained Mr Heaton said he decided to run because Ward needs someone to attend their meetings and better speak on their behalf to provide a balance He said he understands the problems concerns and opinions from talking to the friends and peers he has grown up with As a commuter Mr said he understands their Region talks pensions to be like the others problems when there Isn enough local Industry to support more work here Mr has been a member of the volunteer ambulance department for six years and he Is a St Church member He has been Involved In North Halton Scouts and played baseball hockey and soccer as a youth in Glen Williams The candidate offered some topics which he feels will be Important to discuss by the new council problems with garbage at all levels United Way the Bennett farm a two year arts Mr said he recently went on a Agricultural Advisory Committee farm tour and was able to glean some viewpoints from a variety of different farmers Should Municipal Affairs to talk about pension plans for municipal politicians Last week members of Halton regions administration and finance committee supported the Peel resolution and having continuing
