showed Larry Grossman win by a vote lead Unity Now buttons were Immediate ly pinned on by supporters There were other differences also at this weekend convention Held In the Toronto Convention Centre downtown the locale was much more pleasant than last Januarys convention In the CNE Colliseum building You werent so grimy and there were decent washrooms and restaur ants Mrs Sheldon said of this weekend facilities The most important difference according to Mra Sheldon was the different atmosphere in the convention hall this tune around Last time in my estimation there was an awful tot of hype This tune there seemed to be a real sense of purpose and more substance she said noting delegates were talking more to terms of issues than personali ty Keeping after the delegates to support Mr Grossman Mrs Sheldon said she was pleased to deliver eight of 10 HaltonBurlington votes for her candidate Some of tbem we got right there at the last minute The tightness of the second ballot had been predicted by Gftosman pollsters who calculated a IS to votes margin of win for the first Jewish leader of the party I had been be would win but those last 10 minutes I just fell apart Mrs Sheldon admitted She said she was pleased to see the solid well thoughtout decisions candidates were making at this convention not being on the January high of knowing they were the govern ment As a Grossman supporter Mrs Sheldon had tried to put delegates in whod be Grossman supporters also she said She also worked on the delegates keeping tbem faithful to her candidate all the way to the con floor I think hes a smart man and hes very capable of governing Mrs Sheldon said of Mr Grossman Now I think we will see extremely good opposition government and with the next election the Tory government back in power Asxea she thought the slim victory would create party divisions and lead to a resignation as did the last convention less than a year ago Mrs Sheldon replied Absolutely not absolutely not I still say the people never got to know who Frank Miller was He a very competent caring man It work she concluded ON THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS Its not the rock group Nylons but theyre In the same Nov town council candidate Ted Hilton who lost by IB votes announced Monday he wont be asking for a recount although he bad originally intended to do so The Metropolitan Toronto Police Sergeant said the decision not to lodge a formal appeal for a judicial recount was made after much thought Candidates Peter Norton and Joe Hewitt won the two local council seats in Ward 2 Nov Although I believe I have the legal grounds to apply for the recount the effect on Hills woula in my opinion be counterproductive Mr Hilton said Joe Hewitt would not be able to fully perform bis duties as a member of our council until after the judicial Inquiry was completed which could take a few months which would mean that council would not be able to utilize all council members as they should Not only that but the cost of such an appeal could be very high and the judge could rule that the town pay these costs I do not wish to place these burdens on the Town of Hills Mr Hilton said An appeal for a recount isnt automatic when the vote is close as It was In the case of Mr Hilton and Mr Hewitt An affidavit be submitted to a District Court Judge stating the grounds for requesting one Noting the pollbypoll breakdown of election results Indicated he had the support in ail areas of the riding except Hornby and Unhappy MARA calls town plan smoke mirrors Changes made to the town s Offlci al Plan by region
