page THE HERALD Tuesday December a l itws Hills Arts Council Aesthetic value of your paintings fa NOTE The following article Is the second part of a two part series on appreciation by John The discriminating art buyer Is able weigh the aesthetic value of the of art he or she is looking at The aesthetic be high or low but without it as I said before there Is no of art I know nothing about art but I know hat I like is a contradiction in There can be no knowing without knowledge An artist Is able to give a seemingly lifeless object the painting life We all have seen loved ones lhat The most shocking fact about death is that this smiling talking sparkling person we know and love becomes from one moment to the next silent and unresponsive corpse What this person human cal it the I has left and what remains is none of us would want to any longer The artist gives the work of art he creates a part of his soul This is what iparkles and shines and utterly farms and takes hold of us when we look at a fine painting order to have aesthetic value a painting has to live and in order lo create an artist has lo constantly give himself away and renew himself This is an arduous task It is also the reason that many artists are difficult to have around Into the r creations enters what Is best in them Reproductions before man Invented mechanical reproduction methods were strictly speaking copi made by another artist These copies are often of enormous aesthetic interest because they are really a new thing the result or a confrontation so to say between the first artist who and the second who copies it made it his own and by so doing changed It With the reproduction machine In the case of a reproduced painting the mechanical printing press trouble some ghosts have entered our world What was unique says the Mona is now readily available to everybody in reproduction We could ifwe wanted to have a Lisa in every home Garbo is a luminous star because there is only one of her What If we if we would encounter a Garbo in every store office and factory Garbo would be because she would have lost Individuality means of reproduction the visual art work of Its individuality The the power the vital the soul the life of the original is always lost in mechanical rcproduc lion The reproduction is at beat a souvenir It has a place In our affections because of the memories it kindles It reminds us of great art we have seen or it might tempt us to go and look at great art As a poster or on the pages of a book the reproduction is I no but for the serious lover of art the reproduction has no interest because it lacks Individual life it lacks aesthetic value In true original printmaking the Ihe edition is mainly determined by the mater involved The copper plate the stone the woodblock will ear out The material sets the limit for the graphic artist as to how many dry points or etchings or lithographs or woodcuts or serf graphs he will be able to print by hand from them The reproduction is a mechanical mod and by definition unlimited All ting of the reproduction process is arbitrary and an imposed marketing device This brings me to Ihe monetary value of a work of art about which I would like to write at a later date Churches join forces for cantata NUIIVAL Norval United Church held both a carol service and a Christmas bus service along with the
