muscular disorder called Charcot MarieTooth disease known also as Peroneal Muscular Atrophy Named after the three doctors who discovered it 100 years ago this year CMT as we call it leaves a person with limited feel ing andor movement in his or her extremities It Is a disorder of the nerves in these areas and It can feet a person from the time they are born or not show up until later years As muscles atrophy we find we cannot walk well ana lose our balance easily trip often and sprain ankles continuously Some develop what is known as foot drop and have to walk by throwing their feet out from the side Our hands usually lose muscle in the thumbs first and we become unable to pick up small objects open jars and doors write for any length of time or shake hands without pain The disease Is not life threaten but is is serious enough to cause a great deal of frustration and worry To date there is no treatment or cure For years I lived CMT thinking I was the only one with it in the world After a forced retire ment from my work as a journalist searching for others Today I run an organization called Inter national for everyone with this disease Some BOO CMTers in eight countries have found us In months and we have chapters in four countries Canada the England and Scotland We also publish a monthly newsletter for those with the disease and In professionals as well as run the experienced the sorrow of losing and the Joy of wlnn Almost years ago this year old woman lost both legs an arm and the sight in one eye After the se cond amputation a medical error caused a raging infection which resulted in operations to her hip the loss of her right arm temporary loss of her sight and an addiction to pain killers For six long years she was confined to a hospital bed The despair she felt prompted her to at tempt suicide Beryl was guest speaker for the Physically Handicapped Citizens Association at their recent public meeting She is now on active ad vocator for the rights of the disabl ed Her words hope to others as she highlighted some of the changes and accomplishments that have been brought about by the disabled themselves This summer the joys of victory were celebrated by Beryl and the members of her Trans- Action Coalition when Toron to council unanimously approved a fully accessible design for the new subway system This came after ten years of lobbying by consumer groups For Beryl It is on ly the beginning of a brighter future for herself and many others Ontario has a new building code What does this mean for the disabl First and foremost all new buildings with a few exceptions must conform to the specifications described as barrier free design This includes door widths unobstructed passageways runt ml and switches mounted low enough for wheelchair users and proper luminal Ion Suites leg apartments assembly occupancies eg display areas dent areas etc office areas general use or service areas eg cafeterias patients rooms elevators washrooms for disabled persons ticket counters drinking counters etc must provide a barrier free access In seating areas at least two spaces must be given where there arc spaces for 100 peo ple and 1 per cent areas over people Washrooms must be designed to accommodate the disabled whenever barrier free access is pro vided Accessibility signs must be installed at all accessible entrances Where individual shower stalls arc provided In buildings of assembly occupancy at least one Shower stall shall be provided for disabled persons What are the negative to the new code Fire safety factors have
