the HERALD Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown 3Z6 Ontario Home run hitter Bradley benched GARNET COWSILL Publisher and General Manager DAVE ROWNEY Editor Advertising Manager Page Wednesday March Students are back Our students are growing more militant Or is that too strong a word They are however becoming more responsible acting as the conscience for those of us cupied with paying bills raising families and keeping our jobs Those who stdl remember the turbulent sixties recall how easy it was to start a protest Anything to do with government and big business the establishment was a target Marches signs songs and slogans were a trademark of the thousands of baby boomers unhappy with their lot in life Then a funny thing happened The baby boomers grew up They raised families bought houses and cars and soon forgot about the struggles of their generation In the late seventies students discovered that low marks and sit ins wouldnt land them a job in a competitive marketplace The voice of youth cried out for high paying work turn inwards rather than protesting against social pro blems global poverty and nuclear disarmament For more than a decade social ills and military might went relatively unchallenged by youth But the tide seems to be turning At Georgetown District High School a new anti nuclear group has formed adding to the voice of the adult group HAND Hills Action for Nuclear mament At last week students by the hundreds marched about and handed out white armbands protesting the return of cruise missile testing in Canada In Acton a concerned movement has formed an and driving awareness campaign They ve recently held an assembly to warn fellow students about the dangers of drinking and driving From our contact with students we ve noticed a change in their outlook They re studying the sixties with renewed interest We predict youll hear more of a voice from our youth in the near future speaking out on national and in issues And thats good for us all The voices have been silent for too long Calling cards We might as well be leaving calling cards Police in Halton Hills are having a hard tune keeping up with the rise in auto thefts And were at fault Thieves are finding it easy when they go out to steal cars In January there were 33 auto thefts More than half of the vehicles stolen t locked Some residents had their cars stolen because they left keys In the ignition Three cars in January were stolen in this manner many people may not realize is that it is illegal to leave keys in an unattended car according to a local bylaw Halton police officers will be cracking down on motorists who are making it easy for thieves Police will be checking cars in parking lots and even in residential areas to remind us of our responsibilities as car owners Cars left open will have Lock It Or Lose It cards placed on the windshield The cards are a reminder to motorists that most of the nearly 2000 vehicles entered in Halton last year were unlocked And a car t have to be driven for a by thieves Sometimes all a criminal is looking for is something of interest in the backseat such as a case of cigarettes or a bag of groceries Dont be outsmarted by a thief During tin liber sis first 1H in power one of tin home rim hit ten in Premier David s cabinet was Minister Clark and ministry staff the deal wis A public was even scheduled for release of the details Then something The agreement eami One source that stung by from environmentalists that lie ministry was knuckling under to the polluter Bradley and his political people decided to live up to their press clipping I hey repudiated the agreement and made new din Clark the wouldn play It stieimid nil talked fix in the first place The sii ry hemp put out by his people is that he was by his own bureaucrats all really Tories heart Hut Bradley has explicitly denied to me that his civil tried to put one over on him Interestingly when Bradley to explain the process ding repudiation of the initial agree ment lie refused only the second time in decade here I ve en countered such resistance to discuss process That in itself says something Bradley is still one of Peterson better ministers with several sue cesses to is credit and a clear vision of where the Ministry should be gam I Kimberlev Clark iMriVflirr
