powerful film painful to witch much of the time and it keeps the in a state of unn liev tension The film begins with Charlie Sheen arrival in Vietnam where he is greeted by the sight of body bigs being loaded on a plane Sheen plays Taylor a very green recruit a rich college kid with a conscience who volunteered for duty because he fet the poor shouldn be the only ones forced to bear the burden of the gluing When he exphins this theory to one of the poor who had not to be there the other just shakes his head and says You gotta be rich to think like that How The film lakes us through Taylor tour of duty a year when he loses in honor and any illusions he might have had Bravo Company new home and family provides the cast of for the film is Ellos an almost saintly man whose for his men and for the villagers they run across his the audience rooting for him Ttiyloi The other sergeant is Barnes a i Taylor originally admires but ultimately comes to loathe Tom plays Barnes a scarred bottlehardened soldier who tually seems to be the incarnation of The film is a complex exploration of themes the moral philosophical and political bankrupt 1 of the American in nam the destructi humanity through wi of li There filar well the the war nough to the in heroes The enemy is within and it is this that makes the film so live The eivil war raging in the plu toon between Barnes and means that even when the men arc not under attack from the Viet namese the tension remains and death seems even nearer The movie illustrates dehumanizing effects Boys who are barely old be out of high school an with machine guns but guidance or values Vietnam mis movie is a wasteland of losers and murderers a lawless Jungle society where atrocities are committed In Justice is far away The Vietnamese barely inhabit the country there really arc very few encounters where the enemy more terrible than the The scene where the Invades a village illustrates the insanity of of the soldiers Through this I understood for the first time how the My Lai massacre could have taken place Tins Is such a difficult film to watch The tension horrors never end Yet it is not gratuitous violence and message Is too important to I cannot recommend this film too strongly but It Is not a movie for the youiif or the squeamish The language is course and the violence shattering Platoon was written ind
