would have been the last person to expect one of them to be hung In the library of his home town more than IX years later But he would have been surprised Next month the Georgetown library in conjunction with the Es Historical Society will be formally unveiling one of six re maining maps in the area after an extensive restoration process costing TOO The Trctnoin map which measures about 20 square feet was donated to the Georgetown Library by Halton Hills resident Marion Young in Mrs Young acquired the map from the family of Allen McCullough after his death 30 vcaors ago Dr pro acquired the map directly the printer George Trcmain In 1 urn very pleased with the Historical Society decision to restore the map said Mrs Young I have always felt thai papers be available to public and not rolled up In a comer In my When Mrs Young donated the map lo the Georgetown library with a donation towards its restoration her two stipulations were that the map be made available the public and that II must stay in the Georgetown area The Oakvllle libraries have a copy as does the Archives of On tarlo i the Public Archives of Canada The map is a Kad astral type which means that it shown not only the roads and landmarks of the area but also the every farm and the owners of it at the time The map has been fully restored and mounted and will be hung in the reference department of Georgetown library In April It s probably the single most im document we have in the col lection Mr Walter Lewis reference librarian for he Georgetown public library Mr Lewis was also director of the Historical Society at the time that the decision was made to restore the map The Tremaln mop was restored by Mr Keith of The Framing Centre and Georgetown Book Bin ding We restore lots of mops and prints but this was by for the largest Mr The process took about a total of hours spread over a time period of three or four days There were six different leges involved First the heavy layer of varnish which was about one sixteenth of an Inch thick had to be removed To do this the massive map was laid in a shallow tank of chemicals and was carefully rubbed with cotton wool Next the linen backing had to bo removed Because the map was so old the paper broke up into about pieces during this process but Mr el ton was prepared Like a giant jigsaw puzzle the map was with more chemicals then carefully put back together on a Japanese tissue backing No surprisingly Mr felt that this was the hardest part To finish off the project the map was then treated with a special paste to bring back the snappy texture to the paper which had been lost over the years The map now lies between two sheets of plexiglass set It a hugh antique frame In its pre sent condition map will no longer deteriorate with time Financially the restoration of the map was paid for entirely through Individual and corporate support The Georgetown Chamber of Com merce funded half of the project while other sponsors included Mary Cooper John Marion Young Marsha Nelson Dominion Seed House Glen Williams Town Hall Board and the Historical TRIO KODAK PAPER PHOTO FINISHING nation HiltPljU 1ZB SL WATCH THIS NEWSPAPER FOR UPCOMING
