to be cold the rivers will be swollen and it might even be raining This causes special concern for the community Satur is the Crazy Boat Race a hilarious annual spring event Race participants and race organizers have to exercise extreme caution and must be aware at all times of the potential dangers on the river If they dont this could be the last year for the race Race entrants are a strange lot They spend countless hours in basements garages and backyards finding the right materials to put together an craft They brave the cold dress up like madmen and act like children all in the name of fun They give the community a chance to laugh and to applaud the indominable spirit and creative energies of the do it yourself er But entrants have a responsibility to take care of themselves and to not endanger others That why no one should tolerate any person racing who has been drinking before or during the event The river is going to be too swift and cold this year Some serious accident is bound to occur perhaps drown if those in the race sensible enough to watch out for their own safety For the organizers and marshals it will be important for them to be visible before the race checking entrants for signs that they are incapable of safely navigating the nver The race is so much fun for so many people And the cause is so good Money raised will go to fight multiple sclerosis a crippling disease which affects thousands of Canadians The watchword for this year s race should be caution Fun and safe are compatible words We just need an equal measure of common sense amongst all this silliness Falling behind Dry reading perhaps But nonetheless a document on population projections for Halton Hills is revealing It says a lot about where we ve been and where we want to go A Halton Region report from the planning department once predicted our town would grow to in 1986 That estimate was made in 1975 before there were sewer and water problems coupled with an economic downturn The report reveals how large Halton Hills used to be in compared to the other regional municipalities Back then the town made up 6 per cent of the region s population Today it makes up only per cent Growth has eluded Georgetown and Acton with Oakville Burlington and Milton taking up the slack An updated forecast predicts the growth in Halton Hills will be 39 300 in and in 2001 By the year we will become a full fledged city of 59 that s estimated of course In the meantime the report documents how our birth rate which was once the highest in the region has fallen The news gets worse There has been an increase in migra to other centres We re still a young community with more people in the five to 19yearold age category and the 2024 year old category than any other age group What the report shows is how the town hasn t kept up with a growth in population around us Halton Hills has been the odd man out and we ve had our share of over potential development As for the crystal ball predictions for the future we 11 leave those statistics for the planners But projected growth figures tell a story of their own we re ready to grow and can wait to start Names in the news A Bill Smith Golf Tournament Is scheduled for June New this year Is a special draw being offered at per ticket The winner will receive a voucher good for a trip for two anywhere files up lo a maximum value of Along with the plane tickets will be spending money offered as part of theorize The Bill Smith tournament has raised ooo since 1977 Yes in fairness one must admit It would have been a very difficult political for government General Motors on interest free loan to maintain car production at Us plant near Thercse Que Refusal would hove been even difficult for the government there is something decidedly disquieting about General Motors worlds biggest corporation get ling interest free loan of million From the two governments to keep the plant operating Last year had profits approaching billion the Canadian government had a deficit of some 32 billion Makes you wonder whether It really who should be lending the money to Ottawa finance Minister Michael Wilson could certainly use it in his effort to reduce the deficit In any event one would think GM could afford to keep he plant In business However once It becomes known that Governments have money available for even the wealthiest companies to stove off threatened closures it must be rather tempting to go after It And there no doubt thai industry In general and makers in part I cut are going after 1 Ottawa Report MacLeod For starters it s only necessary for a car manufacturer to declare some Interest in establishing a Cana plant and then wait for tlie best offer of assistance PC In the case of the loan which through our complex system also permits the company to save another 100 million In taxes not far removed from economic blackmail Unless governments came with an aid package ihe company said It would close down the plant and throw people out of work Another employees of lying companies might also have ret Ihetr Jobs It not difficult to see why Mulroney government would want to hand over Its million despite warnings from American free trade negotiators thai this could all sorts or dlf ficultlcs And from same political view point it not difficult to see why Ihe Liberals and New Democrats are not savins one critical word about the troubling transaction There are a lot of seats at stake In Quebec It would be interesting to see what the New Democrats might have said before they entertained any hopes of winning a Quebec scat back In days when the party used lo rail away against the corporate welfare bums Bet It would have been a different story David Lewis would have turn the air blue Matter of fact if this corporate welfare had been approved by Trudeau government when the Tories had no foothold In Quebec we might have heard a few words of op position But as It demonstrated when the 18 maintenance contract went to Montreal instead of a more Justifiable W company no political party Is about to risk alienating potential voters in the country And again In fairness one can readily understand their difficulties In this regard STRONG REACTION The great Irony here Is while politicians of all stripes are waxing enthusiastically about the Job- Citizens forum Pay equity debate misleading Dear Sir are being seriously misled by left wing activists who want to impose pay equity on the private sector In setting wages activists wont to substitute government central plan for ihe fret market which operate on the law of supply of Haven I they learned anything from the rent control fiasco premise lo pa equity is that the free market isn operating fairly it discriminates against women in set ting wages However these refuse to face fact tliat I here arc very powerful market factors associated with the family the most unit in our society market factors include Interruption of work and to overtime shift work travel etc These factors affect nil workers However because of the way Canadians hove chosen to structure their families women are more affected by these market factors men If the market discriminates against women one would expect it to discriminate against never married women as well as married What do independent studies A study of 1971 ten bus data showed that never married women earned per cent of what never married men make A IBM Statscan study showed that never married women aged years earned per cent more never married men in the same age bracket A 1985 study showed that never married women aged over earned more neve married men in the same age bracket It simply Impossible lo have these results and at the same time maintain that the market discriminates the 1985 study showed that all nevermarried men earned only per cent of what all married men earned Theres more to computer story Dear Sir Your paper s announcement March that the Hills Public Libraries had received a grant from the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture to study the feasibility of computerizing our culation system was not quite ac curate As you will be aware the Hills Llbranes are already computerized and have been since 1981 Our study will In fact be much more complex and interesting What we ore attempting to discover Is whether we should continue to develop the shared minicomputer based network we have established In with Milton and or whether we should split up the and adopt micro computer based The Impetus for the study Is of course our attempt to control andor reduce our costs However the issues are vtry involved in the quality and level ser available In the microbased patterns of growth in our communities and the probably demands on the system The Hills Milton and network known was pioneer in cooperative automated systems in Ontario This study will continue our in assessing the cost and of networking vs indepen dent systems a few quotes from columnist Don MacPherson of the Montreal Gazette I am not used to seeing the representatives of democratic governments hobnobbing with hostage takers and smiling for the cameras as they hand over ransom payment Does anyone feel pride at having given In to the hostage takers demands He wanl on to say that all things being considered It wouldn t be realistic expect the two govern ments to tell logo lo hell The least our government representatives might have done for our self respect however would have been not to look as they did on Tuesday as though they were ac tually happy lo be paying blackmail This course is not the first time that plant workers In Canada have been held hostage by assistance- seeking nor Is it likely to be the lost But it surely establishes a precedent in terms of rich and profitable companies ex trading money from poor and un prof ita El governm years ago Georgetown will be focus of a half hour radio program on CBCs Cross Section This
