the HERALD Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown Ontario DON Publisher and General imager DAVE Editor Phone Advertising Manager SECTION A HERALD Wednesday April a IB8i Move up date A four month delay hearing Dr Jack Fords appeal is unfair and unacceptable The popular doctor at Georgetown District Memorial Hospital lost his privileges at the hospital effective April But the reasons behind why the doctors privileges were revoked havent been released Dr Ford won be able to defend himself or disspell the rumors and answer until an Ontario Hospital Appeal Hearing Conversely the hospital board want to divulge information with an appeal board hearing pending In the meantime a doctor has been effectively cut off from properly treating his patients Also affected by the boards decision are the dozens of patients of Dr Ford who are suddenly prevented from being treated by the doctor of their choice This is being felt most by pregnant women who have built up a trust with their doctor and now fnce the trauma of finding a new physician These innocent victims of Ford must wait for four months until an appeal can be heard Is this fair to the doc tor or his patients Did Ford have a proper hearing by the board and should he have been invited to defend himself Only a pro per hearing of the Ontario Hospital Appeal Board can answer that question What deserves immediate attention is the length of time it takes to hold an appeal hearing We understand the peal board has a backlog and cases are judged on a first come first served basis But something should be done to speed up the appeal pro cess A doctors ability to practice is being threatened and his patients are in an emotional tailspin Dont his patients have a right to know why he can practise medicine in the hospital No good reason is served by prolonging this issue and delaying the hearing to the end of the summer The matter will only fester in the minds of those who find themselves embroiled this controversy The only solution is to move the hearing date forward Critics of the boards decision should realize that lawyers have advised both sides to avoid comment for fear of jeopardizing their case at the appeal hearing For this reason it would be unrealistic to ask the hospital to public release information about the doctor now An appeal board hearing will be open to the public and all of the evidence will be weighed in a democratic matter Could the board have avoided the apparent feelings of mistrust and suspicion which some people are as a result of the incident This issue highlights the board s decision to operate by closing its doors to the public Many hospitals throughout Ontario have open board meetings Though the Dr Ford decision would still have been made incamera open meetings give people the impression the board invites in put and criticism from the public it serves Dunce cap feeling for NDP hecklers The New Democratic Party MPs who heckled President Ronald Reagan while he addressed Pari la merit are not surprisingly getting dumped on from great heights And It really a very hospitable thing to do When a foreign head of stale is given the rare opportunity to address our parliamentarians common courtesy dictates that he or she be allowed to speak without impolite In lions Ottawa Report By Stewart Leader Ed felt strongly enough about this to phone three offending members Lea Benjamin John Parry and Robinson and give them a small piece of his mind Mr Broad bent I do this earlier because he had to rush out of the Commons immediately after the Reagan speech to attend a meeting of Socialist International in Rome Whether he would hava made reprimanding phone calls Just a Tew years ago when the was busy flaunting Its feisty leftist leanings it academic The point is that the presentday NDP suddenly second in the opinion polls Is extremely sensitive about alienating Its new found support In political centre The boss was mad at me and said bo remarked Mr Benjamin Maybe I should have kept my big mouth shut Just about everyone who has spoken or written on the subject seems to agree One Quebec newspaper headlined an editorial with Dunco caps for the ALMOST Okay we all agree that Ihe hecklers would have been better ad vised to keep quiet as the dent worked through his speech to MPs and senators But In the universal denunciation of the chatty socialists there Is a tendency to overlook what brought on these outbursts And when you consider that every word uttered by the president white In Ottawa was checked double- checked and even tnplechecked by both Americans and Canadians this trip was carefully crafted to avoid any presidential pitfalls one tends to wonder what was behind some of Mr Reagans remarks There are a few people around who think and think strongly that the comments which brought forth the heckling were deliberately designed or that purpose to expose the tackiness of the dreaded socialists This may or may not be so but Mr Reagan certainly seemed ready for the Interjections Is there an echo In here he asked with a mischievous grin And certainly Tory MPs have been making the most out of the rudeness bad manners or whatever else they want tocall It Mr Reagan quick of the socialists also made for great television back home Only the NDP lost on this one ODD We probably never know whether there was more to the denl than the eye in- ear But If the president were coming to Canada for the express purpose of getting a rise out of the New Democrats he nave design a belter speech It t the usual stuff of visiting of slate who Invariably strive to stay away from domestic policies and party ideologies And as soon as Mr Reagan began espousing the glories of free enter prise as he did one knew the New Democrats be pounding their desks with enthusiasm And when he mounted a spirited defence of Star Wars already rejects Canada it was clear that the silence would be even more deafen Among all parties the New Democrats ore the most strident op ponents of Star Wars When the president got around to defending US policy In Nicaragua and talked about troubles on our shores the reaction was predic table It necessary for Mr Reagan considering the purpose of his visit to get into these issues There was ample material available on direct Canadian V S concerns Considering the free spirited traditions of the its not ab solutely startling that the president would hear things like No way Stop Star Wars now and Stop funding ho Reagan Poor manners perhaps but not startling Mr Benjamin while sorry he his mouth still maintains the president also misbchav on Canadian soil And an Mr Robinson says was unacceptable for the president to lecture Canadian MPs on policies either opposed by ment or one of the parties within It Citizens forum Faith in board members Dear Sir Further to recent criticisms of the Georgetown Hospital Board I
