attend July and 5 A well Centennial bash has been planned for all graduates of Georgetown high Come on out and relive the exciting days you had as a student Many people approach reunion functions with mixed feelings But 100 years is indeed special By at tending former graduates are saying their school days counted for something Georgetown high was a central focus for teenagers 100 years ago the same as it is today Young minds were chalenged by earing teachers athletes trained and sweated to bring pride to their school playing against other towns other schools Music students were tutored and clubs provided outlets for all kinds of interest Don t disappoint the organizers of this event who have been planning the reunion for over two years It will be a long time before Georgetown high plans such a gala event again This is one party you won want to miss No to monitoring It may soon cost regional governments more money to administer grants than it does to hand them out Or so it seems A recommendation has been presented to Halton Region suggesting that government grants be monitored analysed and evaluated It sounds all right in print but just think about the conse quences Governments are already criticized for their paper bureaucracies We often hear stones about govern waste at all levels Now they want to administer their own grants The result would be another unwanted time- wasting exercise Already grant requests are researched and debated before being approved If organizations are using public funds they have an obligation to state their intentions We support this practice But it going too far when those grants after approved are analysed a second time throughout its implementa Regional government has neither the funds nor the need to become more involved in the affairs of local organizations If an organization is responsible enough to gain approval for a grant they are responsible enough to administer it ficiently Free access needed It appears that we won t have to worry about paying money to use library services after all and thank goodness Both the library board and the Town Council of Halton Hills stand opposed to suggestions that a user fee be im into the library system to subsidize costs Good for them How could communities put economics ahead of free access to learning Since a times libraries have provided a service to the community What if Plato couldn t have borrowed his librarys copy of The Odyssey In an age of information libra serve as our main source of reference materials audio and visual supplies fiction and much more That some people are charged for wanting to learn violates a fundamental right in our It j not so much the problem of people not being able to afford user fees in a library Though this may be a con sideration for some the main argument is in principal It we want to educate the general public and if we truly believe that libraries must be preserved then it is horrific to suggest user fees We are fortunate that our town has decided to reject the suggestion of user fees but we must always be on our guard For now we arc protected by municipal and pro regulations It seems there is no limit to what peo ple might suggest to save money Our Pioneer Citizen Editor notebook who pioneered coop farm nig In Ontario has been awarded the Herald sponsored Pioneer Award Morley Mills will be presented next week public host That was tin way was with separate school funding when all Ontario PCs Liberals lined up together and ignored the views of the majority of residents when pushing through funding And that the way Premier David Peterson and provincial Liberals would like things to go the MeechLakt now dial The Liberals know are proponents of strong government and they know the mi jor criticism proposed con amendments is they weaken Hit I simply deny that they do And we have repeatedly that the deal t a par lisnn issue and hopes the vn lives and New Democrats will come with him Unfortunately for him this time the cozy little political club that rules this province to be fray ingat the edges this time Tory Leader Larry Grossman on the verge of leading an all out battle against the dial like former prime minister Pierre Trudeau various social livist groups the Toronto Star and most important the current govern of Quebec Grossman sees the constitutional deal as weakening the federal government at the expense of he provinces While Peterson denies that anything has r ally changed In the of powers his main point is the over riding psychological Importance of getting Quebec to feel it is part of the con in this country which it docs with this agreement This implies incidentally that Quebec docs something new frorr thi Why would it sign But Grossman sees emphasis upon Quebec in different Our party wants to be In the Ion but It must do so as part of an agreement that strengthens lit country as a result of having Quebec sign not It as the price of getting Quebec to sign told the legislature assurances tint t hurt powers he said It is not ficient to that nothing much has changed Wi need the proof he said Many believe the STOCKS DM SENS interest means equipping the federal government with the tools and the resources to do the job It also implies not a community of communities not a league but a He specifically zeroed In on the Immigration proposals In the deal These guarantee Quebec per cent of all future Immigrants plus or minus five per cent compared to currently receiving only IS percent Grossman suggests add Immigrants will have to come from francophone areas to meet the Quebec quota with the result there will be fewer Immigrants to Ontario meaning fewer family reunlfi cat Ions here Peterson a response Is to give blanket assurance family reunification won be harmed and that in essence ihc immigration clause means nothing There is no reason people could not go to Quebec and then come mediately to Ontario There is no prevention of that he said Well maybe Critics point out that Quebec could veto the immigration of any non francophone to Quebec In the first place It has In the past In any case Peterson response fits his game plan of denying the deal weakens central authority while Grossman a questions serve to emphasize what was given away This tover yet Citizens forum Death tax only certainties 30 years ago The Delrex Developments re quested
