for Hat ton s waste may be four times the 1984 price if the Region decides lo build three new transfer stations The Burlington landfill site will be filled to capacity by the end of January At that time will be forced into a 100 per cent ex port situation But per cent export will re quire either building at least one new transfer station in south Halton or expanding the existing one at the Aide site The Region could decide to build three smaller transfer stations in each of the southern municipalities If they do so tipping fees the cost per tonne of dumping garbage will Jump from a price of SIS In to as nigh as In 1988 according to the Regions Chief Administrative Of John Fleming The Region currently exports some waste to New York and Dun build the three transfer sites by far the most expensive option the solid waste budget will almost double to 1 million next year Other options Include simply ex ponding the existing transfer station in Burlington or building one or two more transfer sites Each new transfer station costs around Regional councillors have been told that any new transfer stations must be functional by April 1988 To do that their sites must be identified by the end of October Councillors decided Oct ask regional and municipal stiff to identify appropriate means for transferring all or part of the municipal and private waste from Burlington and Milton as viable alternatives to continuing and or expanding the existing transfer facility Regional staff already said the cheapest alternative would be to expand tne existing transfer station That would lcne the Region with a million solid waste disposal budget in 1983 But Burlington councillors are righting that proposal tooth and nail They say Region Is obligated close down the entire site once the dump
