by stacks of scrapbooka to fill in the dates and complete last names that are sometimes el ve Reds work In hockey Is well renowned as coach manager organizer and teacher When he did things he did them his way particularly when he served as manager for local teams Hockey has changed con since the Red era When speaking to him one prepares for upcoming baseball season gets the impression that the sense of was something quite different a few years ago than It is There was a true hockey Iv In Georgetown that flourished during that era It was a family that stood together and fell together To try and retell all the stories the Asseltines can recall would be fruitless since there are so many At the same time some of these stories should only be related In privileged company because their telling could bring some blushes for the principals Involved should be too widely publicized But to whet the appetite here are a few selected recollections courtesy of Red and Jean Asseltlne Although greatest thrills for Red was coaching the local team The players advanc ed to eventually win an allOntario title in the Midget category and five of the players Red had originally coached were drafted to the NHL Red was a driving force behind the Georgetown International Ban tam Hockey Tournament The first year of the tournament Georgetown was hit by unseasonably warm weather dur the March Break The fire department provided them with hoses and the roof of the arena had to be watered down continuously to keep the Ice surface from turn ing to puddles Charlie Jones was the refereeln chief for the first Bantam The second year an ear- old young man by the name of Bryan Lewis took over as and did an excellent job according to Red The term rink rats Is not a particularly endearing term today But in the early years of the tour the rink rats scurried around the rink ready to do any lit tle Jobs that needed to be done One In particular by the name of Don will be remembered by Red for being at the tournament and helping out until he was finally ordered to go home and get some rest One year Red and some other organizers of the tournament decided to slip away for an evening to see a local team In a playoff game While they were gone a few kind souls decided to surprise them planing the ice surface for the following day s act Ion It proved to be quite a surprise especially when the Inexperienced planers toot the Ice down to bare concrete Fortunately games could be rescheduled to the Acton Arena until the Georgetown Ice Red was one of the Initiators of local Tyke hockey In Its second year of operation Red took a team to the Tyke Tournament In Scarborough and was a big hit with Ms kid line On the Georgetown roster was a forward line made up of two four- yearolds and one yearold The three youngsters were con by their op ponents who were mainly five to sevenyearolds But the three took to the Ice on regular shifts wearing numbers onequarter and one- eighth and were a hit with the large tournament crowds At the same time Red and his team won a lot of recognition and respect for Georgetown Georgetown boated a volleyball toomameat at the the tournament to a Hanover
