heritage lost in the shuffle Phone IMS Halloween reminders There will be three types of revellers making the rounds in the next few days as annual rites of Halloween arc And there art several things members of each group should keep in mind The youngsters will be making their rounds trickor treating Monday night and parents should make all the young and goblins are well supervised Trv nol to let the young ones wander too far from home and make sure hey have a predetermined route before sending them on their way ll several years since we heard the Halloween horror stories about razor blades and straight puis being found in candy and fruits But it still is advisable for the parents to check their children s haul after they return for irregularities And if anything suspicious is found the police should be notified immediately The second group to address is the older crowd who will be taking in- the Halloween parties this weekend Halloween provides us with a time to lower our and let our hair down But let not get carried awav Show good judgement when attending these parties and bare in mind that not everyone will be in the Halloween spirit Don t infringe on the rights of others Regardless of how members of your group are dressing up make sure one of them is suitably attired as a designated driver if you re driving to your party destina lion The police will undoubtedly be on the lookout for people who think they can get around the law simply because it the Halloween season so don t drink and drive The third group to address is the one we hear the most about each year after Halloween They re the ones who get a big kick out of waxing win dows throwing eggs and creating other forms of mayhem wherever they go To them a brief message Take a break this year and give the rest of us a break All in the mind Editors Notebook Halloween is upon us and Monday night children in all sorts of Ret will be scurryinf around the olltc gem rotes neighbors Those of as who tune grown loo old join in with kids cm still lht high points of Hallo- weens past For it is an annual walk up a long dirk and mysterious with only glimmers of the moon pier through ihe of overhead Ireesinguidt us This wo the Estate of Hanover and is kids i knew very little about two elderly ladies who lived then The estate itself was quilt majestic dunng the day and very spooky at night was surrounded by a seven ft high iron fence you would sworn the points of ike had been sharpened to a point During the day there was never very much activity on the grounds the estate The odd lime on the way home from school wed see the per going about his But other than Halloween we would never see actual residents of the house Each Halloween was he same We d make the rounds at Ihe houses in the immediate neighborhood Hut we were thinking ahead to the walk down the long lane to the re was Something about Halloween and the that seemed create more excitement lhat diving into the of candy wed col lected The only entrance to the estate were openings in Ihc feme when horseshoe- shaped lancwjy entered to the left of the house and exiled to the right The actual distance from the en to the rear of the house was only about SO yards But when re young it seems like eight miles A group of five or of us would always be together when we entered estate brash joungslers had limits to how far they d go to press their peers like to go on and say how we d encountered a ghost who find rest or how we d driven away I vampire who accosted us Hut simple truth is there was nothing other than worldly about visiting Each year we d makt our down the incident other lhan things our minds would conjure up when we heard strange noise or someone thought be smart and scare the rest of And each year these ladles would come lo the door fuss over how we were and then drop a something Into our goody bags They were oblivious to the trepidation we d gone through to their back door but 1 suppose was understandable To them there was nothing in Ihe least bit spooky ibout their home I guess that what makes Hallo ween such a fun time- of Iheyiar Incidentally Ihe something these ladies dropped in our goody bags each was without fall money As kids this of course told us they rich and us in awe Usually it was dime or a few the odd time a quarter Thinking back probably would have paid a quarter just for tht thrill of walking down lhat long every Halloween I guess that what makes Hallo ween such a fun lime of the year Letter Dismayed by dropping of prayer trilTOIl The following letter submitted for publics lion In Herald Dear Members of Ihe Board of Education As a parent or five school age children four In the schools of Ac and as the pastor of one of the churches in our community of Acton Acton Evangel Tabernacle I was dismayed at the news Hint the Lord s Prayer been dropped by the schools within your ion I would urge you to reconsider your decision in light of the following observations The Nation of and the Province of Ontario Judicial and Educational systems are still based on JudeoChristian principles For those people who cannot with the Lord Prayer there Is still the provision of having their children exempted from any religious exercises The Educational section and sec and of Regulation The present changing of long en trenched standards is done nodale a very small minority of extremely vocal groups As a parent belonging to the majority who wants the Lord Prayer to re main In the opening exercises I am forced 10 accept a position imposed by this smaller Yel under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms 1 am entitled to Public Education for my children without Infringement upon the expression of beliefs public school system In the Protestant pared to the Separate I Roman Catholic System Therefore it is basic injustice to all of Pro persuasion lo now change the system to accommodate those who do not wish lo align themselves with the existing structure If the Board of Education persists in banning the Lord s Prayer and goes ahead with rcplae Ing it with else they would decide on them would like to receive your assurance that my children s rights are protected and respected Consequently I would like to be advised in advance of those time and the dates that are not has on JudcoChhstlan principles in order for me to take steps la i my children arc excused at such times from the influence of these Christian sources It my interpret a tlon of the Education Atl is correct than even as a member of the ma can appeal to the same as the small has to many parents who wish their children had more time to spend in library than they do now I- But that really dldn answer the ml made by another Institute spokesman that rightly Canada s children ask their teachers and parents do not have a heritage too Institute thought reasonable that as seems Liberals moke language classes those of British origin who want lo attend British studies should lie classes In languages to more than students Some classes as in Toronto ate actually part of the regular school day dur which students of British origin arc segregated from the others but not given any instruction In their heritage suggested there is a different principle involved The purpose of the program is language The heritage aspect of the program is strictly supplementary It Is a side effect But that t true of course What language do black students learn In their black heritage classes One teacher of my has made it a point to pursue with his students what they learn in heritage tat classes And by that he mean the formal agenda but what at they Imbibed along with language lesions and history His conclusion is that heritage- language classes are essentially laboratories for transmitting culture old hats in his view I Coolie declared that if Greeks or Serbs for example did not have their heritage- language programs if did have history pro grams that Ihey offered right In
