cold wind whipped across this small bay of open Lake Ontario water trying to chill the will of determined anglers lining the rocky shoreline Surely there couldnt be a more unlikely looking place in which to be enjoying the great pastime of fishing not with the industrial complex facing us from the op posite shore not with the hum of huge generators and the eerie elec tronic voices booming instructions to unseen workers inside that m stallation constructed of big bland blocks of concrete the Lakeview Generating Station and its Lakefront Promenade the worlds ugliest fishing hole The wind blew another frigid reminder into our already redden ed faces about twenty winter anglers lined the shore opposite the hydro station The only thing about this spot that gave rise to any sen sation of warmth or hope was the nickname appended to those four huge smokestacks that dominated the power producing edifice We call those puffing pillars the four sisters a warm name for such a cold place Oh and another source of friend ship was the smile of an ap proaching fellow angler his face weather beaten by outdoor adven ture about fifty years worth Big one Yep he said Whatre you usin he asked as he climbed on the rock behind me Little Cleo blue and silver twofifths ounce I replied proud of the Bulging highpitched zing of my drag as the unseen fish took out more line in a determined run Lets see ooo I think I know whats happened my new friend said Got yourself a long fight there Mississauga brown lots of em in today My God I thought If this was a brown trout Mississauga or otherwise it surely must be close to a world record in size Yes suddenly I forgot about the cold and the unsightly industrial surroundings I forgot the hub of opposing hydro towers and wires acidrain emissions and coal- burning fires I bad perched myself on my favorite rock along this cold shoreline a spot that had brought me luck in the past in spite of the hopeless scrawl of graffiti on the adjoining rock face someone had painted RIP on the limestone slab to my left Rest in peace My lucky rock had paid off again it seemed and I forgot its depress ing intended message The big fish shook the line with a strong quiver as it drove fiercely for freedom I still hadnt even had a glimpse of it Silver and blue Cleo eh my friend said Got a big brown there pretty aire of mat Here Ill help these other My new buddy sure seemed pret ty relaxed about the whole affair given the fact that this could be a new world record and all I decided to take off my gloves in order to feel the line better This was a mistake The fish was to bat tie on for another twenty five or thirty minutes and my hands began to lose their sensation and I darent try to replace the gloves for fear of losing my record brown trout forget the fingers Stand aside my friend directed our fellow anglers and they complied smiled and reeled in their lines as 1 walked past them over the rocks trying to Teep pace with my running fish Hes got a big one there Mississauga brown Now I bad caught my share of nice fish down here at the old generating station but I had never encountered one as large as this unseen beast You see anglers are drawn to this location by a theory a theory that works The proposal is simple enough the ugly old generating station is responsible for power the sort that keeps you regular folks and your toast and eggs and bacon warm while we not anglers ply our trade along the waterfront The power plant hauls in cold water to cool its huge internal generators and the consequently warmed water is shoved back into cold dark Lake Ontario Therefore no ice forms over the water here and the big fish are drawn to feed on their prey in the bay And now my excitement peaked as I sensed the big fish tiring Easy does it ray friend said with a smile Easy easy here she comes And imagine my dismay when I spied the brownish coloration but the toolarge tell tale scales on my catch Bring her this way maybe we can save your lure the friend said knowingly Bet you thought you had a real big brown trout when all it really was Was a tailsnagged ugly old carp I chimed in Mississauga brown fine Mississauga brown over thirty pounds I bet my friend said laughing as he helped to release the fish Well Ill just tell everyone I released a fine carp er Mississauga brown because it was tailhooked I decided Thats the spirit my friend exclaimed Never lie Fishermen must never lie Not give all the facts maybe But never lie and he laughed awry was on his way Hed make a heck of a dan said to myself as I watch ed him disappear over the rocks Hmmm he probably IS a politician or a crazy fishing doc tor SHORELINES Jan marks the Pilot Sports and Marine Ice- Fishing Derby Call Mike in Belleville at and please check
