Selects didnt have a chance to defend their crown in 198788 as a lack of funding forced the cancellation of the champion ship tournament by the Ontario Volleyball Association This seasons team was formed in October with girls trying out from four different Georgetown- area schools who along with Atkinson coaches and teaches at Centennial said the quality volleyball programs run by Holy Cross St Francis of Assisi and Stewarttown have made the coaching jobs much easier He also added that the Selects are currently seeking a sponsor for the team Any groups who would like to sponsor this team certainly would be associated with a team which already has a sound reputation provinclatly Sturgeons Cardiac Kids dumpDerbys ByPAULSVOBODA Herald Sports Editor There was a container of Turns in the Georgetown Raiders coaches room on Saturday night and head coach Peter Sturgeon couldnt have been blamed for dip ping into the stuff after another performance by his Cardiac Kids Hey we like to make them close quipped Sturgeon after the Raiders edged Streetsville 76 in an exciting endtoend battle It was a good win and it was good to see the guys rebound after losing the streak The Raiders latest unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end in on Friday where the Blades scored a win stopping Georgetowns string at nine games seven wins and two ties the same number they had ac cumulated during an earlier streak before Christmas Saturdays win left the Raiders in third place four fill points up on fourthplace Streetsville with the Derbys claiming one game in hand If we end up in third well happy said Sturgeon whose Raiders have been waging a long- running battle with Streetsville for the Central Jr B loops west divi sion three spot RAIDERS The Raiders secondlargest home crowd of the season since the December Kids Night promotion was treated to a fastpaced game with a little bit of everything Offence was the keynote but there were some big saves at both ends of the rink and the bodies were flying as both squads threw their collective weights around I thought we got off to a good start we came out strong but in typical fashion Streetsville came right at us said Sturgeon The Raiders blew out of the gate to build up a 41 first period lead also in typical fashion but this time they managed to avoid their perplexing second period jinx Each team traded a goal in the se cond stanza and Georgetown led with 20 minutes left Streetsville outscored Georgetown in the third but netminder Curtis Green weathered a sixattacker Derby storm in the final seconds and Kevin Dances goal of the game stood up as Raiders earned the win by a slim margin Along with Dances two goals one on the other Georgetown tallies came from Travis Cole Chuck Loreto shor- Chris Lee Davin Ciglen and Brent Presswood Assists went to Cole and Rob with two each Mark Pries Shannon Storr Ciglen and Loreto with singles Raider captain Pries turned in a particularly strong performance deviating slightly from his usual Brad Marshtype game of steady defensive work when he carried the puck deep info the Derby zone before setting up pointman for a blast from the point that beat Streetsville starter Jeff Brake near the end of the first period That goal also marked Brakes exit from the game as he was then replaced by Steve The Derby starter must have ex perienced some deja as he was also replaced by dur ing Streetsvilles last visit to Georgetown an 119 loss on Jan Final shots on goal were even at apiece Continued on Page 16 Saturdays win left the Raiders there were some big saves at both Travis Cole Chuck Loreto shor- Continued on Page Jazz up the AllStar game and give Raiders a song Showdown program filmed one So why dont coaches pick the Switching to the junior I With the NHL heading into ite AllStar break and the local juniors prepping for playoffs here are just a few observations and ideas from this scribe Why doesnt the NHL do something to jazz up the annual shinny classic For Instance in the NBA they have slamdunking contests al halftime of their AllStar tilt It presents a little more interest and excitement for Joe Customer Why not do the same to the NHL Remember the old NHL Showdown program filmed one summer in the 70s in It pitted the leagues best shooters against the leagues best netminders in a oneonone penal ty shot situation and also featured an obstacle course for the best skaters Detroits Mickey Redmond now a respected TV color com mentator won the first one by walking in about five feet from the net and blasting a past guys like Tony Esposito And speaking of the AllStar game how come every year theres so much conflict when the respective conference coaches choose stars from the bottom teams to fill out the roster This year Glen Sather of the Oilers picked Gary Leeman from the Leafs ahead of Eddie Olczyk And Boston bench boss Terry OReilly ignored the two star rookies of the Rangere Tony and Brian So why dont coaches pick the best player from each team regardless of how well they might fit into a lineup Who cares about that anyway no one really cares who wins the darned thing they just want to see the best players in action Now Leeman is a good hockey player but Fast Eddie is definitely the bonaflde star of the Leafs the only one theyve got And one final AllStar idea How about an intermission con test between the leagues best fighters They could set up a ring on the ice at centre and the top 10 or 12 scrappers in the league could go at it for one round elimination style In case of a tie points would be given for dropping the gloves quickest and pulling the jersey over a guys head Switching to the junior scene how come they dont have music at Arena during Raider games The Raiders could adopt a team tune to play as they hit the ice before each game the theme from Raiders of the Lost Arc How does that go anyway and perhaps a tune to be played each time they score Ive heard some good stuff played in the Raider dressing room following a game so why not during When I was the announcer for the U of T Vanity Blues hockey team back in 78 I sure couldnt make the team so I had to do something coach Tom Watt instructed me to play the theme from Rocky when the Blues hit the ice to start the game I dont know about the butlsurefeltmotivated
