Page 18 THE HERALD Wednesday February 1 1989 Work ethic of Mad Dog Madill highlights strong effort McNallys reach for top at Silver Stick By GOODHEW Herald Special Brian Markham went for the top and chose to enter the McNally Minor Novices Into the Newmarket Silver Stick tourna ment It was a tough task as Silver Stick tournament draws mainly tournament winners from both the States and Canada Our strategy was to play our stronger players and go for the win Our boys first met Brooklin Whitby tournament winners earlier this year Brooklin took the early lead in the game and we not on our heels looking for their first win Just when you figured they had us Chris Hall came up with some fantastic goaltending saving shots that would make even NHL coaches take a second took Robert came through as he does many times to fire one by the strong Brooklin goalie to tie the score Jeff Barr Jeff Telford Richardson and Joey Goodbew were on their toes and kept scoring chances to a minimum With 21 seconds left in the game Brooklin created a scramble in front of the net reflec ting one by to make it a game All players played well and cer tainly made Brooklin fight for the win The second game of the day Georgetown met North London certainly another strong team With even our strongest players out there London took the lead in the first five minutes of play and never looked back Joey Barber was in net and found it a frustrating job having that puck fired at him from every direction and often Joey showed outstan ding team sportsmanship for an eightyear old after a bad start Joey pulled himself putting the team first ahead of himself This is a rare quality of such a young age But coach Bob McLeod sent Joey back to his net to finish the game where Joey immediately put his team first again and shook off his frustrations making some great saves Trevor Rich Ryan Smith Dan Cabra Robert Larose and Robert McLeod made some nice tries only to find London all over them Judd Richard son was moved up to offense hop ing his ability to go end to ena would spark Georgetown and pro vide some goals With only three defensemen and a lot of ice time to cover defense Jef Jeff Telford and Joey Goodhew showed what they were made of playing long hard shifts and still managing some dazzling moves The boys dont call Mike Madill Mad Dog for nothing although he saw little ice time when played he gave 110 percent Digging along the boards is his specialty David Jeff Quinn and Mike Krouser also saw little action but you can be sure London remembers them on the ice digg ing and passing making some nice plays Georgetown fought til the end of this game Georgetown returned Saturday to face yet another big centre only to discover after losing two games and no chance of staying in the tournament coach Brian Markham could not be there leaving the team to assistant coach Bob and Paul Larose and did their best to fire up our boys and keep spirits high to go for a win just for the record Again we played our strongest players and three Again our boys faced a strong team who took an early lead Robert McLeod had a nice shot on net only to be stopped by Meadowvales hot goalie Ryan smith Robert and Dan just missed on a number of occasions Judd Richardson made some nice breakaways but just couldnt get it by the goalie Just when it looked like it would be another scoreless game for Georgetown forward Trevor Rich banged one in Once again Mad Dog Madill and David Markham have their all to dig the puck out to their team mates Joey hung tough seeing almost 10 minutes straight ice time and Jeff and Jeff Telford kept us in the game on a number of occasions Special men tion must go to Jeff Quinn who travelled to Newmarket but saw no ice time for his great show of sport smanship in keeping a positive at titude Also Joey Barber who also saw no ice time was right there with Jeff cheering his team on The final score was 31 The next day Georgetown shook off their bad luck when they met Brampton in town winning Joey Barber was in net showing he was no quitter and can shake off a Valentines l3ay swim on Feb 11 Bring a valentine for your favourite lifeguard and if aside in their round at the OMHA playoff level by Chinguacousy The sweeping wasnt easy for because the put up a pretty good fight in the first game and most of the second one One of the things that the did differently in the first game against was to hustle offensively The first goal was started in their own end as Kyle Hancock dug it out of the corner to Pete Mashinter Pete made a quick lead pass to a breaking Gary McNiven and Gary made sure of his breakaway chance to get the first goal got on the board and then Jamie Briggs jammed on in after taking a pass from Gary McNiven and roun ding behind the goal Ching came back and ran the score to a 32 final In the second game the started out fine but when Ching got out in front by a score after two periods the gas went low octane Even then- the boys scored twice Gary McNiven took a hard shot on goal that went off the goalies shoulder and over the line Then Gary and Pete were in a goalmouth scramble that Pete scored on Final score was 62 for Ching to advance from the best of three series fed in the shot and he wasted little time in snapping a shot past the goaltender to even the score Sheppard put the Domtar Packaging side ahead with Glaser drawing an assist on the goal A late third period goal by the hosts sent the game into a ten minute overtime period Aldridge on a determined effort knocked in a rebound off a shot to give the Minor the lead With the Oakville net empty Jim Katsilieris passed to Sheppard who fed for an important insurance goal In this game it was John Wallers turn to excel in the Georgetown net and that is ex actly what he did in making a host of point blank saves Coaches Chris Milne Dan Curtis and Wally Petrie will now point the Packaging squad to the winner of the MiltonBrampton series which at press time was tied at a game apiece NORTH END NISSAN 610 MARTIN STREET MILTON ONTARIO Located at Carols 65 MAIN ST S Phone for an appt or please drop by 8772981 Gift Certificates Available MORE CAR FOR
