approved to tram some teachers assistants and secretaries in CPR according to a board report released Thurs day The report says some staff could be trained in cardio pulmonary resuscitation by St Johns Ambulance at a cost of per person An additional would go toward increasing the hours of CPR trained teachers assistants making the total budget for the first aid program The report prepared by Superintendent of Special tion Services Garry Crosmman says responsibility for first aid ser vices was taken away from school nurses in 1978 when funding no longer came from the board but from the Halton Department of Health Less emphasis was placed on the first aid requirements of the schools says the board report And a legislation passed in 1984 called Ontario Regulation 516 de- emphasized the health nurse as a first aid giver The focus was turned to health maintenance says the report But the recentlycompleted board study points to increasing needs for first aid the schools At the elementary level an average of onehalf hour per day is spent by teaching and secretarial staff to administer first aid This increases at the secondary school level where one-and-one- half hours per day were used by secretarial and teaching staff The Trainable Mentally Han children require a full time first aid administrator says the board report The board proposal supported by First Aid year service will be evaluated and a policy put in place The board program if passed by trustees at a meeting could be in place in the fall of 1989 The Halton Board of Education voted Thursday to approve a proposal to protect students with special sensitivities to the school environment These students called en vironmentally hypersensitive or EH students are a very small population with very specific needs say board trustees In a report published by board superintendent Garry Crossman immediate action is recom mended for EH children who have sensitivities to a wide range of foods chemicals and environmen tal substances going beyond the normal Such action would cost the board to research and implement at the elementary level and it would cost the board to renovate a classroom to suit the needs of the EH children The EH classroom would be located in South where the need is greatest said Mr Crossman Of 21 reported cases of environmental hypersensitivity 17 of those students are located in Burlington schools Of the schools who responded to board survey only one student in Hills is a medically detected EH student The student a trainable mental ly handicapped student is from Joseph Gibbons School in Georgetown The principal of Joseph Gibbons Doug Magwood says the EH issue has gained interest in the school over the last few years Its nothing new said Mr who said he would like the system to review the whole spectrum of environmental con But Mr Crossman said the board has already taken action to reduce environmental hypersensitivity It has made use of irritant clean materials has altered dustmg processes removed items contain ing urea formaldehyde and has improved air filtering Painting and repair work are planned for low impact time periods and irritating chemicals have been removed from elemen tary programs said Mr The Report approved by the board trustees was submitted by Mr Crossman and is the- work of the EH Steering Committee The committee is
