grabble with during a competition in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania two weeks ago Bill Murphy favored to repre sent in the 119pound class at this years upcoming OFSAA meet travelled with C Drury Spartans to a dual high school meet in Pittsburgh on Jan 28 and was floored by some last minute rule changes They wrestle whats called folk style down there explained Mur who was pinned by a U S op ponent in his first bout There different rules and things you cant do It really wasnt explained to us until the morning of the meet Points are apparently awarded differently than in the traditional freestyle method of wrestling practised in Canadian high schools Youre not allowed to grasp an opponent when hes on the bottom and you dont get any points for getting behind an oppo nent said Murphy pointing out just a pair of different rules employed in the folk style bouts Despite the rule changes however Murphy said the trip was a positive experience and it ed an ideal opportunity for a close- up look at what is considered a ma jor sport in most of Pennsylvania Wrestling is their number one sport said Murphy Canonsburgh High School located just outside Pittsburgh and which hosted the dual international meet has a weight training room that would nval most pnvate health clubs and a permanent wrestling room said Murphy When a kid is seven years old he gets a letter inviting him out to the public school of New Orleans not as tough as the trip Pauls Call Paul Svoboda Herald ShtIs Editor Spending your weekend cram into the back of a window less cube van with 14 sweaty guys might not be your idea of a good time If so I dont blame you However when this reporter did exactly that on a trip below the MasonDixon line last weekend he was a bit disap pointed when the aforementioned Journey was finally over You see rugby players observe a curious rite of winter At least one time during the off season they must get together with a bunch of former team mates form what is commonly referred to in rugby circles as a touring side pile into the aforementioned van and plod south for the Battle of New Orleans The Gras Rugby Festival hosted by Louisiana State University is this modern day Battle of New Orleans Over 32 teams from across the USA and Canada gather an nually in Baton Rouge fight it out for a piece of hardware and some begrudging respect and then ven ture into the wilds of forbidden New Orleans to sample the flavor of Mardi Gras madness But while the battles on the fields and the battles to move ones body through crowded Bourbon Street may appear to be the toughest assignments on these annual forays the actual journey south itself is often the most daunting obstacle So it was that the Rock n Roll Rebels a collection of serious ruggers out of Ottawa Toronto and now Georgetown ventured south last weekend Freezing ram and snow squalls saw the squad still outside of Col umbus Ohio by Friday morning A vicious euchre game occupied a foursome of our party while the rest of us dreamed drowsily of warmer climes yet to come But alas all that dreaming went for naught Upon arriving in Baton Rouge stiff and stuffy at 4 a Satur day we found the weather even colder than the Canadian clime we had left behind Yall can expect some freez ing rain on Sunday drawled a hotel doorman Hey whatever happened to the sunny south It was slightly wanner when we caught the tallend of the Sun day night Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans but the weird weather greeted us again as we began the long trek north rain in Alabama Come on give me a break Tennessee sunshine was finally found and a memer group looked forward to a quicker trip homeward But Murphys Law applied once again and a blown front tire just as we crossed the U S Canada border again left us to battle the elements Finally back on the road one tow truck ride and later the Rebels almost wanned to the sight of that familiar Ontario winter once more Oh yeah I forgot to mention it The Rebels won the Why youd be surprised how much warmth one tin cup can give of f during a cold trip north
