schools travels a sluggish path through the Board of Education trustees are expressing concerns that the policy wont cover all areas of safe ty The first aid policy was first introduced to the board in January when presented by Superintendent of Special Educa tion Services Garry Crossman The policy has up twice for information If passed it could see staff trained in cardio pulmonary resuscitation beginning as early as September Staff members will volunteer to have training in First Aid said Mr Crossman He said legally the board cannot force staff to take a St Johns Ambulance course This raised concerns for Georgetown and area trustee Dick Howitt Mr said schools in North Halton with smaller popula tions could suffer a lack of volunteers But Mr Crossman assured there will be 10 hours of first aid service at all elementary schools and hours per week at all secondary schools Burlington trustee Marg Bullock was concerned about lunchroom safety She said supervisors in school cafeterias should be trained in the Heimlich manoeuvre Is choking an issue or is it only a minor consideration said Mrs Bullock The board staff said funds would be set aside for Heimlich manoeuvre training Milton trustee Bill Harrison said he feared the board was opening a Pandoras Box by implemen ting a first aid program in the schools But Mr Crossman said although the policy would increase our commitment
