2761 ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Sandy Weeks and Lane share the honors week after helping the Central Ontario West team win a gold medal at the Ontario Winter Games in North Bay Mar Sandy and Christina 14 were part of the fivegit team that bested all flther Ontario regional teams to take the Games fivepin title Bowlers strike gold A pair of Georgetown bowlers went north in search of gold and they found it at the Ontario Winter Games in North Bay Sandy Weeks 17 and Christina Lane 14 both of Georgetown were part of the Central Ontario West team that won the gold at the Winter Games five- pin bowling competition on Mar in the northern Ontario city Over the fourday competition the Central West representative squad bowled 10 games finishing first place overall with 56 points a full two points ahead of second place Southwestern On tario In the semi finals Central West topped Central East before stopping Northeastern Ontario in the gold medal final Weeks and Lane qualified for berths on the Central West regional team after surviv a gruelling playoff competi tion in Streetsville to the Winter Games The bowledoff against other top bowlers from the region and finished among the top five to earn spots on the team The final obstacle the girls had to clear to win a trip to North Bay was completed in Hamilton where the Central West squad finished first against four other zone teams hoping to represent the region Weeks also just missed winning a medal in the girls individual bowling competition finishing in fourth place in the final bowloff and coming to within 30 points of the bronze medal Lane also put forth a strong day on the alleys in the individual competition placing ninth overall Atoms hang on Mike and Sean Peasgood scored a goal each as the Georgetown Atom Selects hung on for a close win over Chinguacousy in exhibition hockey play at Memorial Arena on Mar 20 The home team took a 20 lead into the third period after Olsen opened festivities with an unassisted marker in period two followed by winning goal less than two minutes later from Wesley Burke and Dave no match in 29th annual GMHA tourney championship Milton mighty in bantam final HOCKEY Arm in arm A member of their games but worked hard as one of two Georgetown squads in the annual event Herald photo the Oakville zone to beat net minder David White That goal which at the tune gave Milton a 52 lead came just nine seconds on the heels of first goal of the night which was assisted by Cox The Cox Henneberry connection proved to be a good one for Milton as Henneberry scored his second of the night in the third period also assisted by Cox while Cox s first goal in period one was also set up by Henneberry Tyler McManns potted a hat trick for Oakville Milton finished preliminary round play with a 1 slate before doubling up on Cambridge in the B division final Oakville meanwhile had a first round slate before they dumped Chinguacousy to take the A division title In earlier semi final action on Saturday Milton advanced to the final with a win over D division champions Pickering while Oakville downed Port Perry division winners by a count Port Perry had earlier claimed the C crown with a rousing 12 2 Hockey Tournament as Milton doubled up on Oakville to win the 1989 title last Saturday at Arena Mike Cox scored two goals in eluding the eventual winner the second period to lead Milton cup- winning offence Cox capped his strong performance in the final game by receiving the tourney coveted MVP Award following the contest Milton led throughout the final taking a first period lead and m creasing the margin to in the se cond before icing the cake with a trio of third penod markers Cox eventual game winning tally came at 29 of the second period as he took a pass from teammate Pat Henneberry off a centre ice faceoff and zoomed into trouncing of with Pickering taking the D crown ban with a defeat of Brampton on Friday Georgetown s two tatives in the 1989 the Bantam and Bantam Minors didn fare quite as well as they had hoped they would After losing their tourney openers both squads went on to lose their next two con tests as well to miss playoff com petition The M and M Pro Sport AA Bantams were unable to compete due to OMHA playoff commitments After dropping their opener in a close 32 loss to Hanover the Johnson and Associate Bantam B s were blanked by Pans and finished their week with a loss to eventual division winners Pickering Brad scored the lone Georgetown goal in that one with Chris Burrows and Alan Fudge drawing helpers The Chateau Restaurant Minors came back from a tourneyopening 60 loss to Pickering to put in a strong effort against Brampton dropping a 54 contest The Minors last game of the week saw them take a knockout punch from Pans Against Brampton Tim Presswood ld the way with two goals and an assist while Derek Ellard also had a pair of tallies Shawn Pearson gathered two assists with Dave Osborne and Jeff Pettigrew helping out once each In the Pans loss Matt Downs and Derek scored for Georgetown with Mark Johnston and Scott McGuigan earning Along with MVP Award following the championship game Oakville Morgan McNichol was presented with the Red and Jean Trophy as the week long tournament s Most Sportsmanlike Player Oakville s Jesse Robertson took home the Georgetown Referees Association Trophy as the tourney top goaltender and Milton s Peter an ex intermediate Raider and former NHL netminder earned distinction More teams needed to renew tournament Midweek musings from the sports desk There was some good hockey at Alcott Arena last week during the 29th annual International Bantam Tournament and although chairman Rick Hume and his cohorts worked hard to pull it off there has to be some disappointment at the dropoff of the competition Apparently it wasn t too long ago that upwards of 30 and 40 clubs would attend the annual usually with a couple of representatives from the US to give it a truly international flavor This year only 19 teams decided to take part two of them from Georgetown with nary a rep from our southern neighbors Conflicting March Breaks ongoing playdowns the reason for the absence of the local AA squad and some last minute drop outs Toronto Hawks Woodbndge affected at tendance Let hope the tourney lineup increases next year Although he didnt win the big one it s still been quite a season of accomplishment for former Gemini star Wayne Morrow Now playing for the St Mary s University Huskies down in Halifax Morrow was the Atlantic nominee for the Sullivan Award presented annually to the best Canadian collegiate hockey player in the land The University of Alberta s Stacey Wakabayashi a fiveyear winger who led the nation in ing this year took the award at a ceremony in Toronto last week Meanwhile it s a good start m college hockey for Morrow who was named to the Atlantic Union s 198889 all star team as well Still speaking of college hockey Raider forward Don Cruise may stay in Ontario next year to play the university game Cruise was approached during the season by Ohios Kent State University along with Chuck but he may con playing at either the University of Toronto or the University of Western Ontario And still with the Raiders goaltender Curtis Green saw some action last week as the OHL s Guelph Platers wrapped up their regular season schedule Green joined the big club after the Raiders playoff demise and he suit up for Platers post season tilts They re apparently ready to invite the lanky backstop to camp next fall Members of the Georgetown Figure Skating Club
