fledglingartist girlfriend and assistant Ar- feels stifled by his celebrity and wildly unfettered lifestyle Francis Ford Coppolas Life with out Zoe is the fanciful tale of a con temporary Eloise Heather McComb who lives a grand life in the Sherry Netherland Hotel while her glamor ous parents Shire and Gianinni traverse the globe Woody Allens Oedipus Wrecks is the comic tale of an aging Allen of course saddled with the ul timate overweening Jewish mother Mae The Scorsese segment gets the an thology off to a terrific start Its a beautifully shot moody piece a real evocation of New Yorks big- bucks art scene Coming after such a muscular piece of work the confec tionary Coppola segment seems wispy and unfocused It tries too hard to be magical and ends up seeming precious But the Allen episode brings the film to a wonderful close The par ticularities of the situation are worth discovering for yourself GRADE HEART OF MIDNIGHT R Carol Rivers Jennifer Jason Leigh the highstrung protagonist of Matthew Chapmans highflown suspense shocker asks herself the thriller- heroines quintessential question Is she going bananas or is someone or something trying to do her in Inherit ing her beloved dead uncles ware houseturnednightclub Carol has moved into the clubs living quarters to oversee some renovation Suddenly its trauma time Raped by two local slimcballs she finds that the police suspect she invited the at tack Selfdeprecating cop Peter Coy ote offers to help but even he is not to be trusted Meanwhile bizarre things keep happening at the club Sleeping in a Carol wakes to find a knife ripping through the mattress from within Does she move out Of course not or there wouldnt be a movie No simple writer- director Chapman wants us to see the nightclub with its dark secrets of kinKy sex as a metaphoric place where Carol must confront her child hood demons This flashy dip into per version is ingeniously conceived and designed yet Chapman doesnt quite pull off the it would be bet ter to serve buffet style and let the family balance their plates on their laps Certainly it would be nice if we could eat outdoors his weekend but unfortunately Mother Nature has not been that kind to us There is much you can do to use your space wisely If you have areas of your home that have been previously unused and unfinished you might consider making it a spring project to get them tidied up and finished off so that by the next time you have your family and friends over you will have a little more finished space for them to spread out in Improving your home is an
