Federation of Anglers and Hunters Conference here recently One talked about the past One made promises for the future The audience made up of members of Ontarios largest pro vincial conservation organization was basically an unhappy one Many OFAH members feel their concerns are being ignored by the Ontario government in parks policy in funding for participation in environmental assessments and in land use planning Minister of Natural Resources Vincent Kerrios speech dwelt on the past attemapting to explain to hunters why they should not feel betrayed by the loss of hunting in an area of Ontario that is the size of the province of Nova Scotia in cludes much of the most accessible recreational land in the province OFAH vice president Professor Dave Ankney of London Ontario said I think the government mis judged the situation People do care very much about land use and they have every right to object to the kind of urban elitism and idealism that is being turned into law Restricting activities such as hunting and trapping in parka does nothing to tackle the real en vironmental and wildlife problems that we have in Ontario president Charles Alex ander added Im disappointed that the Minister of Natural Resources would come to our con ference without anything new to of fer All be did was attempt to justify things the provincial government has already done He could have presented us with some funding for rewards in anti poaching programs announc ed the hiring of more conservation officers or banned commercial But to see him do nothing but dwell on the past was dismay ing On the other hand Progressive Conservative House Leader Mike Harris who was minister of Natural Resources the Miller government looked to the future He said he would pressure the Peterson government to review its parks policy and promised the conservationists that if the PCs return to power there would be public consultation rather than ar decisions and a return to multiple use and wildlife manage ment as the proper bases for land use in Ontario Hams said We are not in in promoting one use of natural resources to the exclusion of others nor are we interested in dictating activities We are prepared to create a forum for discussion so resource users can come together to come to terms to develop a framework that respects people wildlife and our natural en vkonment
