HERALD Wednesday April 12 Join in the celebration What would spring be without the annual musical Spring Celebration of the Georgetown Choral Society Like raking the lawn and watching spring bulbs emerge from the garden the ing concert has become somewhat of a tradition for Georgetowns residents Friday April 21 and Saturday April at the Alliance Church Main Street South you will be presented with a varied program The poetry of Walt Whitman had a powerful fascination for British composers in the dosing years of the century and afterwards perhaps because its lack of a nebular meter made it peculiarly apt for musical set tings and also because it reflected the questing spirit of mankind as a new century ap proached One of the composers who turned to Whitman was Ralph Vaughan Williams Vaughan Williams first Whit man settings were composed in and in he started out with Darest thou now O soul walk out with me toward the unknown region The work was completed in and submitted to the Leeds Festival where he conducted October It was a great success and- led to him being acclaimed as the foremost of the younger genera tion in England Toward the Unknown Region has retained the interest of choral societies because it is well written and also because the music romantic in Idiom has an unfailing sense of elation It is also of course fascinating to hear the emerging trademarks of the mature Vaughan Williams the abrupt keychanges the plodding piz bass the swift build up to a climax The work is constructed from two main themes one solemn the other aspiring but a third is introduced for the final exultant section Although Vaughan Williams is often a favorite of the Choral Society you will also be hearing Randall Thompsons setting of Robert Frost compositions of the late Barry Gosse and a very special surprise from Andrew Lloyd Webber Tickets for this concert are available from Ox bow Books or from any choir member or from HOME OF ACTON PRECAST CONCRETE LTD SEPTIC TANKS MO PADS STEM PORCHES SOWRIKS RR 2 8531529 SEPTIC TANK PUMPING
