first to speak in opposition to this years budget at a meeting Thursday night I cant support this budget I wont go into a lot of the detail but I cant support the direction of some of the initiatives were taking Some of the larger expenditures include million for classroom computers for library upgrading for special education supplies and services for additional support staff and for class size reduc tion at the Grade 1 and Grade levels Acton and area trustee Brace said this years budget is very accountable She respond ed to the criticism of social ser vices We taking a very short term if were saying we should not be spending money on social services Mrs Bruce added that to call the budget out of control is irrespon sible have trouble when hear statements like that A large slice of the budget pie goes to salaries wages and fringe benefits almost 77 per cent of the total Supplies services and utilities take up almost 13 per cent Furniture equipment transporta tion contracts debt charges and miscellaneous costs eat up the re maining per cent Board Director Bob Williams said the budget process go through does put each item under scrutiny Board Chair Pat said special services programs approv ed in for implementation this year are reviewed several times by board members It is far off the mark she said to say budget decisions are rubberstamped We have to make wise deci sions spending the money the best way we can for the good of the students Mrs Hillhouse added that budget is in line with other boards Last year Halton spent an average per student Other boards in the area ranged from an average per pupil in Metropolitan Toronto to per student inLincoln county Peel York and Hamilton- school boards all had higher perpupil costs than the Halton Board of Education last
